WCTA potential conflict of interest??

Beach Fanatic
The Walton County Taxpayers Association prides itself on being the paragon of virtue on spending. Maybe that is good.

Tomorrow's Walton Sun covers (but not in detail) the debate over the Neighborhood Plan for Blue Mountain Beach.

In a nutshell, the Neighborhood plan is an attempt by beachfront homeowners to make gulf front property private. An examination of the original plot shows the fallacy of this arguement.

One of the WCTA board members is Emmitt Hildreth and Mr. Hildreth is one of the beach "privateers". Mr Hildreth was also a large donor to Bob Hudson's county commissioner bid. Mr Hudson is president of the WCTA.

The legal isssues involved in this will result in extraordinary legal fees for the county. Isn't it ironic that WCTA board members will add to county legal costs?

A. We have a potential conflict of interest. WCTA board members could use their organization to thwart funding for legal issues.

B. This may be the result of smaller government....folks with money can push their agenda.

Dam I hate it when I miss a conspiracy. I think Emmet was a major donor to my campaign also. I know he was at several events I attended. And I had no idea he needed something done. Probably because he has not attended a WCTA board meeting, unless it was the super secret ones I was not invited too. Can you suggest how I can repay the favor for him?

When you join the WCTA, we have no form for you to sign to give up your rights to life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness. Are you suggesting that maybe we should?

Let's do this one at a time.
1. I do not see a conflict of interest in Emmitt Hildreth being a board member of the WCTA. The WCTA has never, to the best of my knowledge, played favorites when it comes to exposing or bringing to light tax money waste or fraud.
2. The mediated plan presented at last Tuesday's BCC meeting was not the one presented by the beachfront owners or the other subdivision plan. It was a mediated agreement between the beachfront owners and those in support of the other plan.
3. The beachfront owners opposed the mediated plan because of some minor changes made to conform with present state statutes and the land use code. It appears to all who attended the meeting they are attempting to back out of a mediation that was made in good faith.
4. The beachfront owners in opposition to the mediated plan, including Mr Hildreth, want their own plan covering, I believe, only the property south of Blue Mountain road. This would be only a portion of the platted subdivision, and IMO is not what neighborhood plans should be about.
5. The mediated plan includes the whole platted subdivision which is the way a neighborhood plan should be, not a hodge podge of properties each with their own desires and no unification of purpose.
6. There is no county interest in these neighborhood plans that should constitute and legal fees for the county.
7. Finally, smaller government would not mean more power in the hands of a few. It would mean less costs for all. IMO, smaller government is always a good thing.
