of summer?

Summer of 1985 on Stallworth Lake-
We pulled up at the Miles Cabin with most of my family in tow. My 2 brothers and I ran straight from the car to the old dented up john boat and paddled over to the beach while my never complaining mother unloaded all of our junk out of the car.
The next day, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins arrived, and the crabbing began. Blue crabs out the wazoo! I remember my uncle spending most of his time having a cold beer, cleaning crab and pulling sand spurs out of my feet. Mom spent most of her time feeding everyone and hanging up swimsuits to dry. The rest of her time was spent on the beach trying to get the attention of her 3 sons who had swum out past the second sandbar.
We were only there for a couple weeks that summer, but I still think about it to this day. No worries except the inevitable sand in your bed and the day you load up the car to go home.
We had been going there for years but that particular summer is stuck in my memory. Good family time! Hope to give my little one some similar memories!

This is very much like the summer vacations I remember from my childhood! Much of the day catching bluecrabs, my mom worrying about us swimming out too far, and the sand in the beds. I had two old school day friends, on separate occasions, tell me how much they loved staying in our old beach cabin, and having my dad's buckwheat pancakes for breakfast.Somes, we roamed thru the dunes finding pieces of old Indian pottery. One foggy morning, we got up very early, stayed in our pajamas, and walked from Eastern Lake to Western lake, and back, along the Gulf, and never saw another living soul... it was all so incredibly peaceful.

Being a young kid and, after playing hard outdoors in South Florida, falling asleep laying on the front porch swing in the heat and humidity of another summer afternoon, cooled only by the shade of the porch and the light afternoon breeze....

One of my best Summer memories is taking my first granddaughter to see the ocean for the first time. I love all of the grandchildren dearly but my Little Squeak will always have a special place in my heart. My wife took a picture of us walking from the house in Seacrest to the beach. She had it enlarged and framed and it is on the wall in the Dining room.

There are so many summer memories from childhood its very hard to choose. But, our trips to Panama City Beach were always so exciting. I remember lots of swimming, sunburns, ghost crabs chasing us at night on the beach as we screamed like crazy, being with our best buddies the whole time - day and night, going out to eat seafood (usually Captain Anderson's) - our one real outing... so sad when it was time to go home...

Also, just the easy days of summer are a good memory for me. Playing outdoors until dark, the sounds of summer - cicadas and crickets, going to the swimming pool for the day, riding bikes, going to the movies, spending time with cousins or best friends. There were no planned activities or camps for us kids - just a wide open summer filled with play. It is what I try to remember and provide for my kid - though things are very different.

Squeezing the whole family into a 2 bedroom 1200 square foot town home. 12 people in that space, no one ever complained and somehow we did it. Piles of blue crab on newspaper. Ahhhh.....

Bluecrabs and Hobie cats... where have they gone, Joe DiMaggio?...

My Grandmother Graves' 4th of July Brunch with great food and running around like maniacs with the other kids playing then moving on to the Chapman's 4th of July picnic; this is a huge family (including all of the cousins) in my hometown and each branch of the family would invite some friends so there would be about 200 people present. Beer and drinks were iced down in old bathtubs, everyone brought tons of food to share, adults hung out and listened to and played some music, us kids ran around like wildchilds and played until dark when we shots tons of fireworks, had blackcat wars and eventually passed out on our parents picnic blankets-we did this every summer until I was probably 20 when the families got too spread out and the host a little too old to want to host anymore.

My mom's father threw huge pool parties every summer, 4 smokers loaded with meat, cases of cokes stacked up well over my head in a couple of stacks, tons of food brought by guests, swimming, playing volleyball, playing croquet, playing case, getting so sunburned that my shoulders and face peeled 10 layers deep and my feet were blistered from the pool.

Hanging at the pool with my cousins, playing mermaid and Jaws and Marco Polo.

Being 10-13 years old and having my mom drop me at the country club pool to meet my friends to swim for the day, ordering club sandwiches, cottage fries and shirley temples and thinking we were soooo cool when we charged our lunches to our daddies!!!

ALL such good stories! Keep 'em comin'.

LL--So good to see ya!
