What is the Tea Party?

New posts
You all can say what you want, but if you look at the Walton County Tea Party Patriot website linked by Andy A., it looks to me like the agenda is anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-United Nations taking our guns and anti-any religion other than Christianity as being 'American'. Yes, there is talk of small government and spending limits, too. Interesting that Thomas Jefferson, who I strongly doubt would consisder himself a 'Christian' in the 21st Century sense of the term, is so oft quoted on the website (and I am dubious the quotes are wholly accurate-Mr Kelly who looks to be part of this group was busted printing fake Abe Lincoln quotes in the Defuniak Herald before he was shown the door). If it floats your boat, OK, freedom to assemble is yours to use as you wish. I'll pass.

Could someone please give me the demographic make up of the Walton County Tea Party: male vs female, under 55 Vs over 55, white Vs non-white, white collar Vs blue collar, etc.

If I had this information I could tell you exactly who the average Tea Partier is and what they believe in (once the fake "let's take back the Constitution" mantel is removed), and I will be 95% accurate.

Any takers?

Do you think that if I was told the race of our current president, that I could tell you how good a job he is doing? And how long he'll last in the job? :bang:

Key word used? Amendment. This document had to be amended right from the start so if you want to use the document the founding fathers agreed upon I’ll give you the bill of rights but, what about the 17 other good changes to the constitution that happened well after the founding fathers? I believe their key argument is out of context. The constitution is a living and growing document and was meant that way or they would not have left a way to amend the articles. Just a reminder it was the war to end slavery that really put the federal government in prespective. Until that point it was all about state rights but we know how that ended.

Exactly, and that ability was built into the original design. So long as we respect original intent and avoid undermining the power the Constitution holds, we'll be just fine. I think this more than anything is the main thrust of the TP movement - the federal government is an abomination in the context what the Constitution defines as it's role. We need to start undoing some of the damage that has been done over the last 70 years. If we choose to expand federal power, it should be accomplished through amendments that grant that power, not through an ever creeping redefinition based on 'reinterpretation' by the people who hold power.

Navigating Andy's link is like experienceing a kind of strange, surreal, tripped out nightmare.
Nothing says you have to agree but I was asked what the Tea Party is about. It makes perfect sense to me but then I've been around long enough to see many things happen in this nation so I'm sure my inclinations and observations are without merit because they have been formed by time and not elite intelligence.

Please tell me I am misinterpreting your post.

I get the feeling from reading their website that they are a state right's type of organization. It's sad but even after the civil war the Supreme Court has had to rule on this issue. They have time and time again upheld federal law over state laws.

I was also struck at all the Thomas Jefferson quotes on the page and I wonder if they have any idea what he really stood for? If you have studied American history you will find out fast he was a fence rider and did not speak for or against much of anything. A very smart man indeed becuase it made him a great politician even in his time.

I just went to the site - I'll pass too skunky.

And this is one of their petitions to Home Depot on the local site:
To: The Home Depot:

I very much appreciate your policy of continuing benefits for employees called to active duty in the military, and making up the difference between military and Home Depot pay. This policy is of tremendous help to military families.

However, I peacefully but vehemently protest the efforts of some local stores (e.g. Boston, Chicago, Southern Maine, and Central Pennsylvania) to promote homosexual sin, especially when this promotion targets children. In my opinion, the promotion of unnatural vice is a terrible sin that greatly offends God, violates Natural Law, corrupts children’s souls, and warps their understanding of God’s plan for marriage and family.

Please change the homosexualist policy pursued by these local stores and keep The Home Depot the family-friendly business we so much appreciate.

Sincerely,

So it is one thing to discuss boycotting a store, but to call homosexualtiy 'a sin that greatly offends God'? I just spent 2 days with the most caring, loving and fabulous men I've ever met. All 6 were gay and two were my brother in law and his partner. They were all in monogamous relationships - one couple for 20 years. They were funny, kind, helping, model citizens and never an ungentlemanlike comment from their mouths - and you should my brother in law and his partner with kids - they are the most caring souls! No "God" could be offended by these men. This is just fear mongering - and if people don't want their kids seeing what goes on at Home Depot sponsored gay pride parades then don't take the kids.

I just love my brother in law and his partner SO much  and I get very upset and defensive when I read such bitter words.
