What to do with leftover Hurricane canned goods....

New posts
Don't get rid of the cans. We all need to get our bird flu kits in order ... at least a two week supply of food, water, meds, batteries, etc., (you know, the post-9/11 list). Assuming we'll have power and Internet (which is doubtful because no one will want to go to work and be exposed to someone who possibly has bird flu), I'm getting everything in place to set up a webcam with streaming audio/video so I can teach my classes from home and not have to be around anyone other than my family members who are holed up with me. That will also allow my husband to conduct all of his business meetings from home and not be exposed either.

Oh BR... there you go again! Were you a Girl Scout or a Boy Scout?

Hey Miss Kitty- speaking of canned goods, how is kitchen construction going?

Floors...check

countertops...check

pantry...check

furniture back in...check

still to do...backsplash, paint cabinents and walls and figure out how much of the junk drawer leftovers to throw away!!!. Oh, and buy some canned goods!!!

BR - you need to talk with one of my neighbors - he has it all worked out. He teaches at Cumberland in B'ham.

He actually lives in B'ham during the regular school year but teaches from his porch during the summer. He is teaching 4 courses this summer - smart man!!!

I never know when you're being serious or not.

That's exactly what I'd like to do - teach from SoWal via a webcam! Somehow the president isn't thrilled about the idea.

I'm serious about this. I've seen this discussed many times on TV news. I asked our administration to prepare a bird flu plan. They conferred with our top microbiologist, and here's what she said:

"As your microbiologist, I would feel remiss if I did not recommend that the institution plan for a flu pandemic as many other organizations are, if we have not already. The excellent website www.pandemicflu.gov has a great checklist for colleges under the School Planning section. Particularly important for us, I think, would be providing for the capability to finish a semester (for those who are able) with some form of delivered learning opportunities. (I?m not sure if we have enough capacity on WebCT to be able to do that now with all our courses.)

Biologically speaking, this is the closest we have been to a major influenza pandemic since 1918, and most experts agree that it?s only a matter of time?and the genetic instability of H5N1.

I?m really not Chicken Little, just cautious."

BTW the website she mentions also has recommendations for individual preparedness, such as a list of food items to keep on hand, etc.
