Where are all the jobs

I know I would sure be surprised.

Dear King (or is it Queen?) of All that is Negative:

Someone gave me this advice when I was 25. I was hanging out in LA for a summer after grad school and needed something better than minimum wage. I was turned down by the manager of a small firm because I didn't have PR experience. I went back the next day and made this offer to the owner (instead of the manager). She was blown away and hired me on the spot- with pay. I shared this trick with others and their outcome was exactly the same more times than not...

You don't get a 2 week trial- you get the job. This is what I meant when I said you'd be surprised what door this trick opens...

There are lots of people applying for jobs with decent resumes, Shelly. My advice helps this person think outside of the box and stand out from the pack.

we are hiring at Perspicasity

Come by and put in an application. We are located in Seaside on the beach side of 30A between Bud & Alleys and Pickles. We are looking for full-time and part-time sales associates.

I received a job offer this morning from ResortQuest. I start working tomorrow I can't wait. Thank you so much for all of your great advice.

All I know is that when I re-do my resume, I'm letting Shelly and Mango do it.

I love you, but I would just as soon have a root canal, maybe two, before I ever did another resume for someone.

But, I will review yours if you want.
Just not for commas though. I stink in that department.

You're a doll. I don't have any immediate plan to look for anything different--until I'm moving about 750 miles east. ;-) But, I'll definitely keep your kind offer in mind!

Here's one suggestion: Start writing your resume for your impending "dream job" now.

First, pull up a few job descriptions on the web and see what type of experience and skills the job requires. Next, bang off a bullet on each item you can address with your current skills/experience. Finally, for each skill/experience you don't have, write a "to do" list and set to work filling in the gaps.

For example, if you currently are a store clerk and you want to work at a bank, you can pretty much knock off cash handling, sales, etc. But say the job requires you to be proficient in Excel and to have knowledge of banking regulations. You can begin by self-teaching on Excel and then apply the skill as a volunteer at church. Additionally, you can sign up for a banking class at a local college. Needless to say, if you're wanting to work in banking you've gotta have fairly decent credit and be able to be bonded, so you need to keep your nose clean or clear up discrepancies well in advance of applying for the job. (Well, you get the picture.)

Banging out a decent resume for a future dream job is more a matter of "Ready, Aim, Fire" as opposed to the "Ready, Fire, Aim" process that is pretty prevalent today.

PS: If you think writing a resume is a b*tch...just be glad you're on the receiving end of a stack of 'em.

I've had my resume prepared and tweaked for years for the same job that Tom Hanks has in the movie BIG, but no bites yet. :idontno:
