Where is the Current Events forum?

I realize that everybody has different life experiences, but I think even at its worst, the discussions were quite tame. Not unlike real-life discussions some of us have had with family and friends and enemies. It made this board real and the great part was knowing that there are people in your're locale who liked to concern themselves with larger issues. Yes, I can enjoy a beautiful sunset sitting at a bar watching Fox News and cursing at the screen whiler a cool ocean breeze blows across my face as I emit a muffled tabasco and fried oyster flavored beer belch. Stella no less. If that's not utopia, what is?

Another great post...but I would have preferred to just hit the thanks button.

I will miss the politics forum because I learned alot from it - news stories I would have missed, different or more informed opinions, and reasoning for opposing viewpoints, but I won't miss the rudeness, whining, and "us vs. them" mentality.

But since the people I enjoyed debating and discussing with I also know in real life (and won't miss the others one iota), not much really changes.

I don' think we will lose all politics. I look forward to lively and respectful discussion on the local political level and the direction of the county as a whole in the local government thread. As far as rep- I don't give a dam bout my bad reputation- Joan Jett

SB44, I respectfully disagree. I have been accused many times on this forum of posting "all about me". That may be true but this post will be "all about me" and the affect shutting down the current events/political forum will have on only one individual. Me.
First of all, this is the only website I come to regularly. I do not belong to facebook, twitter or any other social networks. I came here because this site offers me information about happenings in our local area and information that is of importance. Additionally, I am probably the oldest, and certainly one of the oldest, people who participates in the forums here on SoWal. Some of us that are in the elderly age bracket do not get out as we once did. Consequently, we spend a lot of our time doing things we find interesting but do not tax our limited energy...like purusing SoWal. And that definitely included the political forum. I never, on any given day, failed to learn or at least become aware of something I didn't know about. That doesn't mean I necessarily agreed with what I was exposed to, but I was exposed to it, nevertheless.
As I mentioned to Kurt in a PM message on this subject, this website is now bigger than the founder of it is. While it is his, there is a definite obligation to those who revere and respect it, to allow them usage of it as well. I understand his frustration with some of the antics that transpire in the current events forum but the good that is done there, on many fronts, far outweighs the bad. That there is bad is unquestionable and I am guilty of some of it. There is no question we all need to be more respectful of each other but the subjects presented to us by you, the members, often are ones that stir the passions in us and gets our thought processes going. Its too bad you saw fit to take that away from us, moderators and Kurt.
Where I disagree with you, SB44, is when you say, "since the people I enjoyed debatin and discussing with I also know in real life...". That does not apply to all of us, Scooterbug. For some, those people only exist here on SoWal and while I often disagree vehemently with them, I shall miss that interplay.

I know the reputation button has caused a lot of confusion and some hurt feelings, so it really doesn't bother me that it's gone...

There were a couple of times back in the "good ole' days" when I received PMs about posts I'd written, and it was always really nice to read. It's more personal. I like the one-click response as much as anyone, it's very easy, but it's also very impersonal.

Frankly, I feared the PM had gone the way of the Pony Express. So glad we're being encouraged to use it again.

Andy A - thank you for your thoughts and comments. they are sincere and many of us relate very much to what you have said.

I agree with and appreciate what Andy said. I enjoyed the give and take with those whom I agreed and with those I disagreed with. Due to my work schedule and frequent travels I would never have the opportunity to interact with many of those on this site. Those interactions would probably be lost in a large national site but the Sowal politics forum had just the right mixture of views and posters. I for one will miss it.

We could build a stand alone Politics/Current Events forum for $200 (cost of the VBulletin license) plus monthly hosting and domain name registration.

I'd do this in a heartbeat if I thought visitors/participants of the SoWal politics board would use it. But judging from a lot of the sentiments expressed here, Andy, Idlewind, LS and I might be better off sending each other text messages! Lol

Actually, it's more like removing drunken brawlers from the bar so we can get back to enjoying our drinks.

Not referring to you of course. :drink2:

The difference here is the drunken brawlers have always been in the back room and you did not enter without first opening the clearly marked door.
