Who Sets The School Taxes You Pay

While returning from a meeting today I listened to Mildred Wilkerson's political ad on WZEP. It amazed me with her total lack of understanding about what she does as a School Board member each year during the budget process.

She stated that she was the only candidate for school board that understood that a school board member only voted on the millage rate not on taxes.
:yikes:
I pulled my car out of the ditch and continued home asking passing motorists to forgive my sudden dart into the ditch on the side of the road when hearing this statement

One would assume that anyone seeking a third term as a school board member would clearly understand that the "millage rate" that she votes for or against each year was a vote that set the tax rate ( and therefore the taxes) that each of us pay. She does not control the value set by Mr. Pilcher for each parcel in Walton County. She simply sets what percentage of tax we pay on that value.

How can someone in her second term make that statement ?

The school board is a taxing authority. They reach ino our pockets and remove the necessary dollars required to educate our children after have public input on the budget proposal.

Mildred I have news for you ! You do vote on the taxes that we all pay as a result of your vote. You voted to increase my taxes !

How can anyone place the financial well being of our school system and the education of our children and grandchildren into the hands of someone with that level of understanding of her role in the taxing process.

Oh yeah she is also the one that said that anything that happened over 100 years ago could not be proven to be a fact.

I also was shocked (to the point of practically spewing my just sipped coffee onto my dashboard) by this statement in her ad when I heard it Wednesday morning while driving to work. Does Mrs. Wilkerson actually believe this is true and not have the understanding that what she does on the board has an effect on such things or is she just trying to fool enough people to help her cause? Since hearing this ad I have asked a few people if they were aware that the millage rate does indeed effect their taxes and some of them did not know or were not sure how it worked, so if they would have heard this ad they would have thought it true.

My DFS relatives called to ask if I heard it. Since I can't get WZEP down here, I didn't hear it, and thought surely they must be jesting. So obviously they were NOT kidding...
