Word on the street is that a local Dr.s office got raided.

Nothing in today's Defuniak Herald. If it is any clue, it was actually a physicians assistant that got busted that was dubbed 'doc'. Of course, a physician theoretically was signing off on everything the PA did, so more heads might roll.

As an aside, God help us all when cops can start rummaging through your medical file without obtaining a court order to do so. Robert, I'm surprised a good conservative like you would endorse this, especially with the heavy handed treatment Limbaugh got in his particular situation. There are a few pill pushers around here, and they are well known, but the serious pill action is in south Florida. Trust me when I tell you lots of the prescriptions abused in thus neck of the woods come from deep south Florida. Hopefully our new attorney general will go after these thugs unlike our lame duck.

And the Atcay is out of the Agbay...

Thanks Skunky.

We've not received any reports from any agencies on this, which means they're probably still workin it.

You don't think that people who shop doctors to obtain large amounts of prescription drugs to abuse and/or sell should be punished???
I certainly do.

Shopping to sell is one thing. Shopping to abuse, a whole different matter. I have had to go through this abuse thing with a couple of different family members. Seems to me that so many Doctors are throwing pain pills at a symptom instead of finding a solution. As bad as the reputation seems to be for the local hospital, there is where we found a Doctor that helped find a solution to the symptoms and also was able to help us manage medications to prevent addiction.

Sounds like someone got a visit from the Federal/State Task Force that recently brought down Webb and Ignasiak and is about to bring Bourlier to trial. Prescription Drug Addiction is up 400% according to a recent SAMSHA report due to sleazy medical practicioners becoming drug dealers in white lab coats. Addiction is a chronic, progressive, and often fatal biological brain disorder. Addiction is treatable, and excellent treatment resources exist in our area. They are provided by caring, ethical, licensed/certified professionals. If you are seeking treatment for prescription drug abuse or any other addiction ask direct questions about qualifications, experience, certification, and licensure prior to committing to a course of treatment. Appropriate assessment and diagnosis are the critical foundation for success in recovery from addiction/alcoholism or any other behavioral health issue. Look for providers that are members of the American Society of Addiction Medicine/Licensed by the Department of Children and Families to provide Substance Abuse and Mental Health services and require counseling in addition to medication. Counseling should be provided by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker or a Licensed Mental Health Counselor that is also a Certified Addictions Professional.

I think part of the problem is that it can be difficult to determine just how much pain someone is legitimately in and that one doctor is not in charge of the care/all the meds so it is harder to get the whole picture and all the sources.

Though I definitely agree that far too many pills get handed out like candy for minor ailments that IMO could be easily treated w/ aspirin, Aleve, or a pair of big girl panties.

Am hoping electronic medical records and streamlining the process can catch some of it, but looking at my own medical care - where my doctors and pharmacies are spread across 3 counties I can easily see how someone can take advantage of the system.

I think for some people, the risk of addiction is a small price to pay for easing of agonizing pain. This is particularly true with the elderly who may just want to live out their end years in relative comfort. Also drugs like Aspirin and various NSAIDS can eat holes in the stomach and esophagus. Given the choice, I might choose addiction and mental impairment over agony and bloody stools.

While I do have some serious issues with the government maintaining privacy of health records and their capabilities, I also have come to understand that we desperately need a centralized database to monitor certain drugs. The elderly are just as prone if not more so to different doctors over prescribing. It takes staying really involved in their drug management to make sure they are not either becoming addicted or starting an alternate income stream.
