Mindfulness. good one paula. too often we just toss out of our minds some pretty important things we just don't want to think about - like being mindful or aware of taking care of ourselves.

DD - get to the doctor and try the new chantix or wellbutrin (zyban). I've heard good things about both.

Free medical tip du jour-demand the cheaper wellbutrin-it is the same medication as zyban for less $$$

And buy an entire supply of nicotine patches. The Wellbutrin helps with the mental part, but does nothing for your body's physical nicotine addiction. It is such an easy way to help yourself along- and you will feel beter physically during the time when your mind is going crazy.

I also can't stress enough about really plannng out a quit date. It will drastically improve your success rate. If you are going the med route, give yourself 2 or 3 weeks on the meds. Pick a quit date several weeks out, and you will find yourself thinking and planning and believe it or not, getting excited about it.

I was told that the Wellbutrin somehow also lowers the desire to smoke.
I have 2 family members who were heavy smokers One quit with Wellbutrin without patches. The other took it because she had trouble sleeping because her husband got cancer (not to quit smoking) and she went from smoking a pack a day to 2 or 3 cigarettes daily. (better than a pack) She takes a really small generic dosage of Wellbutrin only once a day at night (75 milligrams)
I guess it works differently for everyone. :idontno:

I'm sure you're right. A couple of people I know used the Wellbutrin alone and just put down the cigs after a few weeks. I just know from my personality that it will probably take it ALL! Why, oh why, am I so weak?:bang:

Ok day # 1 for me.....no more sugar, lots more exercise !!!! I am determined to do this right!!!!! will keep you posted...........................

What jdarg said. I quit using Wellbutrin and Nicorette. I had failed twice before using Nicorette alone. Wellbutrin/Zyban makes it a LOT easier.

Another thing I did - and my family and co-workers had a ball with this - was to take a drinking straw, cut it in half, stuffed a piece of a Kleenex in it, and held it like a cig when I needed to hold something. Sometimes, I found it necessary to act like I was smoking it. I looked really stupid, but it made the cravings pass more quickly. Eventually I was able to trade in the straw for just some good old-fashioned deep breaths.

I also visited an online message board for folks quitting smoking. The one I used to go to is no longer at that site, but I'm sure there are others. It is helpful to know there are others feeling what you are feeling when fighting the "nicodemon." That was, of course, before SoWal.

Hmmmmm....there's a lot of ex-smokers out there!!
Thanks, SN!! I likey your idea....most people I associate with already think I'm a little nuts, so this would not surprise them!

How about candy cigarettes to hold in your hand rather than a straw? I suppose you could end up eating a lot of candy cigarettes, though. We can still get them at the little candy store in massachusetts where we got them when we grew up so if you want some...

As for mindfulness, maybe you could train yourself to be mindful of how healthy your body is getting when you want a cigarette and don't have one.

OK, what will your reward be for not smoking -- I think you should do something nice but not eat something extra. Maybe subscribe to a favorite magazine. I get so many magazines in the mail -- it's less expensive than therapy and I get such good ideas.

Good idea, Paula!! I don't see them much around here. Will let you know if I can't find them...you're a peach!!

Heck, when I quit smokin', I'm goin' to SoWal for my reward!!
