Those who could help are our county leaders. I've been active in speaking out, contributing needed items, and connecting people with those who possibly can help. Trying to provide a safe, clean place for people to live.

Have you tried running for office? Anyone who is a legal resident and I believe over the age of 18 can run for county office... :idontno:

Good answer. If I were to move anywhere, it would be SoWal, but right now I have too much holding me here. (Does SWHS have a chorus teacher? If so, can s/he be ousted by 2009? Or is Seaside Rep ready for a full-time music director?) I think this is why we know so many people who don't live there but spend a LOT of time there!

(Wouldn't we say, then, that these homeowners/part-time residents do more to put money into the SoWal economy than what they take out? They come in and pay for goods and services, and yet their own businesses--where they receive money--is outside SoWal. Pretty good deal for that dreadful tourist town, right? Or am I way off?)

Sounds good to me :D. How about we take it a step further and skip the middle-men I'll post an address and ya'll send me the checks directly. I'll even use some of the proceeds to start a brain surgery clinic, I found my tools the other day (gutter nail and a hammer for the delicate work) half price lobotomy if one mentions Sowal and totally free for the one who started this thread.

Um...I think that someone already took advantage of that offer...:banging:

If you're really interested in helping people, help the service industry workers to unionize. It used to be that factory work paid well in the U.S. because of unions. Then those jobs went overseas for cheaper labor. Can't blame businesses for that, it's just sound economics.

Service jobs, however, cannot be outsourced.

I may not be the most qualified to join this battle of wits, but I have to say we moved here specifically to work in the construction industry - which I believe is part of the service industry. My husbands business is one that will always be needed, and we couldn't imagine him doing anything else but servicing our wonderful neighbors in Walton & Okaloosa counties.

We had a choice to move here or somewhere else, just like everyone else who lives & works here. If this area does not have what you think are real jobs, maybe it's time to move on?

I wouldn't trade my husbands company or my retail job, (which I don't HAVE to work but CHOOSE to work), to live anywhere else! This is a real place, with real jobs. I love my real job, real paycheck, real benefits. It's all about personal choice.

There is a local lawn guy who retired & moved here and was bored so now he has a lawn company that keeps him busy a few days a week. A choice he made to make himself happy. Who is to question what kind of "real job" makes each of us happy? Certainly not you. He loves his "real job", thank goodness!

All it takes is to do what makes you happy. No matter what the job is.
