YOWZA this looks bad for the state university system and it looks like the number of players caught might rise. I am ashamed to be a Floridian. Yuck!
"Florida State will be without at least 11 available players with starting experience when it plays Kentucky in the Music City Bowden.
Twenty-three players, as of Tuesday afternoon, are expected to be penalized as a result of an academic misconduct case involving student-athletes and a former tutor who provided improper help with an online test, according to sources close to the process. An FSU official said the number could still grow or decrease. FSU confirmed, in a statement released Tuesday afternoon, up to 25 players will not participate in the bowl. Bobby Bowden did not specifically address the academic misconduct case.
?Some of our players will not travel with us to the bowl game,? Bowden said. ?We have some players not traveling for one reason and some for another, including those who are ineligible for the bowl because of academic issues. We can not be more specific than that at this time.?
?Our staff is in the process of determining what adjustments we must make for the game. We will have a few practices to get our plans in place.?
The total group, according to sources, also includes at least four walk-ons as well as several players who would not have played in the bowl game for reasons other than them being involved in the case.
The interview process continued into this morning when at least one player spoke with FSU officials. A high-placed university source said that the interview process has been completed. Involved players will continue to practice but will not travel with the team to Nashville.
Underclassmen who have admitted wrongdoing are expected to be suspended 3.6 games, including the bowl. Although the exact penalty is believed to have not yet been determined by NCAA, the penalty will carry into next season.
FSU President T.K. Wetherell and Bobby Bowden confirmed last week that players would not participate in the bowl. Wetherell is on vacation.
Lee Hinkle, vice president for University relations, said FSU will not identify the players because of federal student privacy laws.
She added that not all players who will miss the game because of rule violations are tied to the case. Hinkle said the university?s final report into academic misconduct will be completed by the first of the year.
In other FSU news, offensive line coach Rick Trickett was not at practice. He is expected to be interviewing for the West Virginia head coaching vacancy. "
