Newspaper reporting,or the lack there of

Please enlighten why the article was inaccurate. My interest was the question by WCTA asked about the placement of advertisement for meeting times and the answer by the Board having to be placed in newspaper such as the Destin Log. My second issue is the lack of coverage by a south end paper when there used to be plenty of coverage in the past.

I will start with the first paragraph that states "with only one commissioner, Harry Millsaps, not in attendance.

WRONG - Harry Millsaps was present and two other commissioners were absent, Gilbert and Stange.

Paragraph two states that "Jack Abbit reported the SWFD's operating budget to be 14,538,163,520".

WRONG ! That is the Certified Tax Roll value as certified by the property appraiser. Only wrong by 14 billion dollars though.

Paragraph Three states "which sets the millage rate for the upcoming year at .7600 a rollback from .7709'

WRONG !

The millage rate was set at .7600 an increase from last years milllage of .7000 mills.

In my opinion thats three strikes and you are out particularly on those key points.

I could go on but I do not find it adds anythng.

Get the facts straight !

If you are referring to the September 23rd final budget hearing for SWFD, Commissioners absent were: Maurice Gilbert and Harry Millsaps.

Mike Stange was absent from the Sept. 8th tenative budget hearing.

Well I guess we will have to wait until the minutes are available because some womn named Diane somethng gave me those absences over the phone.

Regardleess the newspaper article was wrong on three key points.

It also shows that your account of "lowering the millage rate" was wrong, but more to come on that later. You voted to raise the millage rate.

The minutes were approved last night...that is where I got my info from.

Interested Girl,
Please don't take my questioning as someone seeking to argue. I am just reading the paper as I see it. I expect the paper to get it right. If they don't then folks like you are to be appreciated.
Thanks again for your insight.

I post my viepoints as I believe to be accurate. Yep I make a mistake or two here and ther but I generally get it right.

I believe the local media just flat gets it wrong too many times. Most people believe what they read from local reporters and all to often they get it wrong.

Then you have those who post blanty incorrect data ( I didn't raise the millage rate - I owered it) and tries to say your just old and don't understand .76 is smaller than .70) and noone seems to set the record straight or care.

Seagrove Girl - maybe you can get then to post them online. The minutes from both hearings are not online for this year or for 2007 or 2006.

I'm a reporter for the Herald/BB and I can say our writers, our Editor, and our publisher cares if we get it right. I work very hard to be accurate and when dealing with budgets or numbers, I always try to get my hands on an agenda or resolution with the numbers in it, so as to make sure the info I put out is as accurate as possible.

If you find inaccuracies in our reporting, please, email our Editor, so, we can research it and print a correction. His email is ron@defuniakherald.com

I know that all of our reporters work very hard to cover a wide variety of subjects and we appreciate feedback when we are doing well and serving the public's needs, as well as when we get it wrong. Thank you.
