Gov. Crist well thought of?

OK my savings came up to $8.33 a month, thanks Charlie. I reduced my insurance cost by 50% by shopping around, not anything the State has done. I won't ever be moving because the I can't get what I owe. If you think about it, California may not have any reserves because of the Propositions the citizens have placed on the ballot related to taxes and money over the last 10 years, much as Florida has been doing in the last few years with amendments. Granted the housing bubble burst, and most government entities have/ were living high, at the taxpayers request for more services. Now we have to cut, but we still have needs that have to be covered and our elected officials feel the need now to do what the majority wants, instead of doing what is best for the State. Are we being Proactive or Reactive to the situation.

California doesn't have any reserves because they spend outragous sums of money on all kinds of crap the voters approve through propositions. Things like stem cell research and free healthcare for illegal aliens and bloated government services and god knows what else. Again, be glad you live in a a state filled with citizens that don't waste money on stuff like that.

I am glad I live in Florida, but we cut services to those in need, Americans, because it is the cut cost at all cost. When this attitude we have now places us in a position where taxes will have to rise, then we will be in the same position as California, no reserves and we will struggle just as much to provide services. Read the post on the Deer Lake closing, there are people who think that it is so minute of a sum of money its hardly worth cutting. There are others who want to sell off the property, and there are those who do not understand where the savings are going to occur according to the original news article.

Are you sure? I was just looking at my property tax assessment statement for 2008 - I'm seeing a 20% reduction off what I paid a year ago. Some of that is depreciation and some is the exemption.

Also note, one of the change has to do with limiting increases, which we obviously aren't taking advantage of right now.

Yeah, homestead increased, assessment went down, ad valorem went down and only reduced 8.33 per month.

In good times, we have excess funds to spend, in bad times, cuts must be made. Budgets can't continuosly go up up up! They must be balanced right? Or we get into some real trouble.

How about.."In good times we have excess funds to SAVE for bad times." This apparently is lost on the masses and the reason why those organizations and people who previously were raking in the dough during the good times have now crashed and burned.

One of Jeb!'s few good decisions was that, when given a couple years of projected budget surpluses, he was big on making sure those funds didn't get directed toward recurring expenses. Instead, reserve funds got beefed up, and the state ended up paying cash for some infrastructure projects that otherwise would have been paid for by bonds. Nice to not have to be making more bond payments now.

You mean the elderly that consistently vote against even basic things like healthcare for children and education. While I agree that some of the stuff California has voted for is wasteful, let's not act like we live in some sort of good sense mecca.

Maybe they vote that way because they didn't have federally funded services like this and did just fine on their own? They have far more experience at this than we do, maybe they know what their doing?

What, like the social security payments that end up being far more than what they payed into the system, or the medicare/medicaid benefits they get that everyone under the age of 60 heavily heavily subsidizes? Or all the services provided under the Older Americans Act?
