Burger King has an interesting promotion going on, as Ad Week reports, and I'd certainly call this the advertising gimmick of the week: If you're willing to remove 10 friends from your Facebook page, you can have a free Whopper.

Burger King Gets Aggressive (and Wacky)

Burger King has been hitting the marketing gimmick's pretty hard in the last few months. Now comes the "Whopper Sacrifice," a campaign to get people to drop 10 friends on Facebook and get a free Whopper.

In some ways, I actually see the value. Certainly many of us have certain friends on Facebook that we eventually realize we don't really know. Maybe they friended us back when we were just starting out Facebook page and were glad to have them aboard, or we friended them because they were a friend of a friend, but then at some point, when you're connected to a lot of people, you see them on your page, and you think, "Who is this guy?"

But whereas you can normally unfriend a friend without telling them, at least from what I recall, to win this free burger, you have to add an application to your Facebook page called the Whopper Sacrifice. As you eliminate some of your friends from the list, each person gets a notice, according to Ad Week, "explaining that the user's love for the unlucky soul is less than his or her zeal for the Whopper."

That may leave a bad taste in your mouth. On the other hand, if you really do like Whoppers...

OMC...this could get ugly!

NoHall could eat Whoppers for the rest of the year!

Burger King is gross. The lowest on the fast food chain. The prize would have to really be something to give up my friends!

But their marketing people were brilliant to tie into FB.

now that is a whole new twist in advertising. I guess it may turn out to be very effective since BK is obviously marketing to FB users with a zillion friends who are really not friends. in that case, its just a game added to all the other games users can choose to play or ignore. I can imagine that many FB users will have a blast with it.

but, you are right - the concept is gross at least on the surface, even though it is not about friends really. maybe some users will learn to distinguish between real friends and fake ones. but that's probably too much to expect from a fast food giveaway of (non) friends for food ad gimmick.

Thank you. BK is so gross. Hate it. Yuck.

BK changed their french fries several years ago. It was ruined for me since that day. the fries are horrid. but I did like the burger, onion rings and fish sandwich way better than McDonalds. I don't like either place. (but I will eat Mc Fries when on the road - they are still yummy!).

I LOVE Chic Filet! and Wendy's.

Besides not liking the food at BK, the stores themselves always seem dirty to me. I have decided I only like crinkle cut fries and not many FF places have those, so it's a good reason not to eat them. I swore off McD after that horrid experience in Tallulah, La. several years back. I DO love CF's little chicken biscuits they have in the mornings. Heaven.

I am on Facebook. Not sure how or why I got there. Apparently, I have poked people and passed out drinks to my 4 friends. I have no idea HTH I did any of it. :idontno:
