Petreaus: Burning Qurans = Lives at Risk

New posts
I don't see this as a freedom of speech issue at all. While the 1st amendment does allow you to spew hatred and make nasty statements, it does not ensure that there will be no consequences for your doing so or say that you are not completely wrong.

This country was founded upon the basic tenet that people should be free from religious persecution. More than 7 million Muslims live in the US and are being physically attacked, having their places of worship vandalized, are being obstructed from building places of worship, and now are having people publicly burn copies of their holy book.

Even if you ignore the injustice and bigotry, ignore that this action should be reprehensible for anyone of any faith, for anyone who wants peace, and look at it from a purely practical common sense perspective, this action is wrong.

We are at war with Muslim guerrillas. Some of the best and brightest American citizens are being killed and maimed and we are spending trillions we don't have. And we are losing the propaganda war that is a big part of successfully ending that conflict.

Regardless of how you feel about religion or your religious texts, the Quran is holy to Muslims and they treat it with great reverence and (rightly IMO) expect others to do the same.

Burning the Quran goes against everything we are fighting for - on a military level, on a constitutional level, on a humanitarian level, on a financial level, and on an intellectual level.

I must admit that if this were a Christian Bible burning, this probably wouldn't be on anybody's radar screen, and that's how it should be.

I think burning or destroying books because of what they contain is wrong. I REALLY think burning religious texts is wrong.

The religion the text belongs to makes no difference whatsoever.

It is still wrong.

That's your opinion. I'm thinking of burning my copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenence just to demonstrate to the world that I think it's the worst piece of crap ever written. Maybe I'll flush a Satanic Bible down the toilet. Anton La vey was an idiot. It would feel so right. If it's your own personal property, it's OK to do with it as you please. If you believe that religious texts are inhabited with a spirit, that's your business. If you think books are sacred, fine for you. What I see wrong about this case is that you have a nutty pastor getting into a religious pissing contest as a means of self promotion. As Geo said earlier, if he were protesting certain aspects of Islamic culture, it would be a different story.

Churches being vandalized - did these receive the same media coverage? I agree that this Pastor has gone overboard, but it is his right. Now, if it wasn't in the media like it is, how many of us would even know about and take respective positions? So, is it the Pastor going overboard or our beloved media? When churches and temples are vandalized in Atlanta, it receives about a day of coverage and then everyone has moved on.

Let's look at Bible Burnings - I choose the Holy Bible because it is both Jewish and Christian text / prose. Just to illustrate:

Burn a flag or a Bible, no problem. Burn a Quran, hate crime.. (this is a blog, but interesting, nonetheless)

And, there were many articles discussing Bible burnings in Afghanistan and other Middle Eastern countries, but I can't get the links to work here for some reason; I'm certain that's a conspiracy.

We need a thread entitled, "Which Books in Your Collection Would You Burn?"

I'd burn my hardback first edition of "An Inconvenient Truth" but I'm afraid it would contribute to global warming.

I actually saw a bonafide green egg not too long ago and the first thing I thought of was Dr. Seuss' book. Green eggs are pretty danged gross - just my opinion??
