I don't see this as a freedom of speech issue at all. While the 1st amendment does allow you to spew hatred and make nasty statements, it does not ensure that there will be no consequences for your doing so or say that you are not completely wrong.
This country was founded upon the basic tenet that people should be free from religious persecution. More than 7 million Muslims live in the US and are being physically attacked, having their places of worship vandalized, are being obstructed from building places of worship, and now are having people publicly burn copies of their holy book.
Even if you ignore the injustice and bigotry, ignore that this action should be reprehensible for anyone of any faith, for anyone who wants peace, and look at it from a purely practical common sense perspective, this action is wrong.
We are at war with Muslim guerrillas. Some of the best and brightest American citizens are being killed and maimed and we are spending trillions we don't have. And we are losing the propaganda war that is a big part of successfully ending that conflict.
Regardless of how you feel about religion or your religious texts, the Quran is holy to Muslims and they treat it with great reverence and (rightly IMO) expect others to do the same.
Burning the Quran goes against everything we are fighting for - on a military level, on a constitutional level, on a humanitarian level, on a financial level, and on an intellectual level.
