A Few Questions about our Local Elections

We are thankfully 2 days away from our first big local election in Walton County since my family moved here in October 2006. Do so many candidates always run for a few offices? It seems that there was a lot of ugly campaign tactics used- is that normal for here?

I am getting to the point where I really don't care who is sheriff anymore - I just want all the candidates and their supporters to hush! And when my first thought of the morning is the BCC race- it is a sign that it is time for this election to be over!

Can I expect life to return to normal after Tuesday, or does the campaign negativity keep up at a fever pitch for awhile?

Maybe some of you that have lived here longer can give me the good news that we can get "back to business" soon.

Unfortunately, I believe it may take a few days for smoke to clear in this election depending on who the winners are. As always there will be some whining and fingerpointing about something or someone will blame everyone (except theirself) for their untimely loss but hey, at least the SIGNS will come down. I agree with you though its time for all to hush. Its been interesting reading on SoWal though, you must admit!
Off to get some much needed shut eye now...good night!

jdarg,

Neighbor, Walton County politics are the best!!! And yes, it will slow down significantly after the primary, but never completely. I have heard that a former Florida Governor once said, 'Walton County is the most political county in the state.' ? Go figure. I love it. Don't you?

I can't honestly say that I love it, but it has been educational on many levels.

Whoever ran a full page attack ad against Alan Osborne in yesterday's Walton Sun is low rent.

One thing is for sure-a bunch of SOWAL sock puppets are on the endangered species list.

jdarg, it is far from over, at least in the Sheriff's race. Remember that there is also a Democrat running for that office, so Tue's election will just determine who runs against the lone Democrat.

Regarding ugly poliTRICKS (didn't mean to be redundant), I've never seen poliTRICKS not get at least a little bit ugly, especially local poliTRICKS.

Politics is never really over in my household; it's just less intense at times. We live our lives in four-year segments. Once we get this election over with, we have to start worrying about what will happen four years from now. In fact, I'm in that mode now.

I read around the state and the area and I think our politics is about the same as everyone elses.:yikes: Sheriff's races are traditionally the worst because the ordinary citizen does not know enough about the real issues so they (candidates) substitute dirty tricks.:idontno: The most important issue in that race for me this year: "arresting tourists on the beach for trespass/ enforcing the county ordinance against parking on the bikepaths" has hardly been mentioned by any candidate. Makes for a hard choice.:bang:

The commissioner races are usually the ones everyone focuses on as the issues are understandable and what happens in the races means alot to the everyday citizen.:clap:School Board races are usually the focus of parents who are having problems with a school and their children. The other constitutional offices usually draw little interest or candidates unless the office is not being operated correctly.:(

Many voters sit primaries out as they believe these races have little impact on their lives.:idontno: In fact local races have the most impact on how you live and if you can make a decent living. Every race needs opposition and every voter should make informed choices. Unfortunately that is not likely to happen any time soon.:violin:

I missed picking up a Sun as we are on our way to M.D. Anderson in Houston. Was it the same yahoo who ran the one in the Herald? His name was Buddy Bostick or something like thatand he lived in Miramar Beach. I tried to call him before I left SoWal to ask him to explain his position and why he was dissing Alan Osbornel. Surprise, Surprise! He didn't return my call.

Same sleazy, slimy guy. I say we chip in for an ad attacking this guy personally when the election is over.

I'm disappointed in the Sun for running the ad. At least a daily paper allows time for a response.
