Cincinnati refugees . . .

New posts
a German version of haggis - sort of - peculiar to Cincinnati. I can post the recipe if anyone is interested. You make it in the crockpot first, chill it in loaves, slice it, and fry it up. Serve with eggs instead of bacon or sausage. It freezes well - most of my new batch is going into the freezer. My mother's family is ALL German, but we never had this when i was a kid. I had to learn about it from my IRISH husband. But we're even - i make him eat sauerkraut and german potato salad and sauerbraten and bratwurst, etc etc.

My son-in-law hasn't had it. He was 11 when his family moved to the US. We all love brats (remember that hubby's family had their own brat recipe at their butcher in WI), except that I am the only one in our family who likes sauerkraut (I was born and raised in ATL --The Varsity in ATL only serves naked dogs, chili dogs, cheese dogs, etc. No kraut.) As an aside, hubby has been to Germany hundreds of times on business. His favorite brats are at the Hanover hauptbahnhof.

January sounds like a great month to try a hearty dish like this!

from what i understand, goetta originated in cincinnati. an invention of the german immigrants to use up leftover pork (we were known as "porkopolis" at the time - mid-19thy century), so it is no surprise that your son-in-law never had it! it is somewhat similar to amish scrapple, but is made with steel cut oats.

yum - brats should be WHITE. hard to find them here. i wonder whether the horbrau haus at pier park (the other is in greater cincinnati) has the real thing?
