If you'r looking for a literary source of extreme violence that has influenced the culture, look no further than the Bible for just about any religion. That's pretty much where it all begins. Everything else is just a spin-off.

There's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

BUT HE LOVES YOU. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. -Carlin, may gawd not rest his soul.

Do you think the government or Hollywood is more to blame for violent gun culture? One problem is that our movies and video games increasingly glamorize gun violence while our governing class generally demonstrates no appetite for imposing 'morality' on anyone.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203400604578074302419883098.html The cleric who heads the Saudi morality police said he is taking steps to rein in the force, the latest move by authorities aimed at improving the position of women in Saudi society amid a public outcry in social media. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/iran-blog/2013/jan/23/iran-camera-coffee-shops A few weeks ago, Tehran's morality police and security authorities told the café's proprietors to install a minimum of four surveillance cameras on the premises as part of state efforts to tighten civic monitoring and security. The owners decided they would not do so. Recognising that this would result in further harassment and eventual closure, they shut down the cafe themselves to protest against the new surveillance measures

People don't kill people with movies and video games, they use guns. There are many countries where video games and movies are just as popular but they have far less gun deaths because they have far less guns.

Let's not forget the very real violence that exists in the sports that we embrace so much. These are activities that we encourage our children to get involved with, and participation is seen as a sign of character and honor. One could even find a similarity between our enthusiasm and religious fanaticism. Contrast this to the fictitious violence in our entertainment outlets. Has anyone ever suffered a concussion from playing video games? Admittedly there have been some tragically debilitating cases of carpal tunnel syndrome, but that is about the extent of the physical damage incurred.

if video games lead to violence then I guess the guy punching the bag at the gym must be a ticking time bomb ready to kill with his bare hands. He should be entered into a national database.

Somehow shooting fake targets with computer modeled guns glamorizes violence, but using your very real AR-15 for target practice does not. The connection between violent fiction and real violence across a culture is not well-established. Just look at the Japanese. Have you ever seen some of their favorite forms of entertainment? But gun violence is almost non-existent. They don't have a whole lot of gun violence. The overall crime rate is very low. Real guns are missing from their lives, but they wrote the book on violent fantasy.

I think the United States government once used the world's most effective killing device so that we WOULDN'T have a society modeled after the Japanese. #justsayin

We have a -by global standards- sparsely populated land with abundant natural resources. One of the things that makes the US less invade-able is widespread gun ownership.
