My diplomat friend Gary is currently in NZ, but his fiance lives in Haiti, which his first assignment. I received this e-mail this a.m., and 25 pictures that are beyond words- these people had absolutely nothing to begin with, and now these hurricanes. He sent them in a file so I will try and post some if I can figure it out.

Suffice it to say, donate if you can.

From Gary-

Hello all,

Since all of you have asked about the situation in Haiti, I’m sending some photos I received from a friend. The situation is very bad, but the aftermath may be worse: disease, loss of crops, hunger and more political instability. Ingrid is doing OK, though I worry about her – despite all the hardship, the kidnappings continue (one of Ingrid’s friends, a business owner, was kidnapped last week).

I’ll be there with her in about a week, thankfully. Looking at the NOAA satellite photos on the Internet, there are no potential hurricanes brewing in the Atlantic at the moment. So maybe Haiti will be given a respite.

BTW, in some of the photos, you may notice that everyone is walking in the middle of the flooded streets. That’s because on each side of many city streets in Haiti, there are deep, open drainage canals (often 2 or 3 feet deep).

Miss you,

Gary

Oh, jdarg...I always think of your friend, Gary, when Haiti comes up in the news like this. :( God bless the people of Haiti.

It seems like the storms take from those who have the least to begin with! Something should be done to help Haiti in the longterm! I can not understand the level of poverty so close to home, surely our close neighbors could help themselves with some well planned "seed" money. I was in Haiti back in the 70s. It looks pretty much the same, if not worse, now. And that was before the storms. I will send what I can.
