Gov Cuts Funding for Disabled Floridians

New posts
I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately. Scott is not your ordinary politician - thank god for that. We did something no other state has done, we put a guy in charge who's capable of making the right decisions, despite how painful the results may be. He's doing something unheard of, he's bringing the free ride to an end. This country desperately needs more people like Scott in government.

Whose free ride are you talking about? Anyone who doesn't benefit from government handouts please raise your hand. We need more people who are willing to share the pain and not shift it and the blame to workers and the less fortunate, I don't see that from the right.

I understand everyone will lose something. But what is lost must be weighed against the good of us all. The tax on government workers that FF2 is concerned about is an example. He is against it because it effects him negatively. But I oppose it because 1) I do not think any new tax helps our economy, and, 2) hurting government workers means those with the skill to leave will leave and our services will be offered by inferior workers. This hurts us all. IMHO the injury to society is not justified by the amount of change in state finances. Every cut should be judged in that manner.
All of us are to blame for the mess we are in and all of us need to help get us out.

How is slashing the budget for the disabled good for us all? The only "good" would be we aren't affected.

All of us - $3,405,303,490,221.20 in 2000 to $9,651,643,154,138.73 as of 3/31/2011. Curbing a binge like this one will not be easy or popular. Hence my point about the need for more people like Scott in government.

The budget wasn't slashed, this particular organization was over budget for the year. They ran out of money and had to cut service payments for next three months. The organization has a budget of around one billion annual.

Could this be why are they "over budget"?

Cumbie said funds for the disabled already had been pared back to skeletal levels. She personally is holding a carwash and bake sale to help out one young disabled client so he can attend a daily workshop program.

Katie Porta, president of Quest Inc., which operates a series of group homes and programs for those with disabilities, said provider rates in Florida already rank in the bottom 10 percent for all states.

The center has not had a rate increase for its services since 2005, and it has had several rounds of cuts since then. At the same time, training requirements for staffers have increased.

30a, you are being gratuitous for your own amusement. to my question...you arguments have no credibility

I would like to see a break down of the budget for this department over the last five years. If in general the amount has remained around 1 billion, I don't see how they could be hurting so badly. The population of Florida hasn't grown much over those years, so the number of cases likely hasn't increased much. This is of course all opinion. Without the numbers we're all guessing.

Regardless of this since the liberals on the board so very dearly want to send another billion or two toward this group, please tell me where it should come from or out of. Need I remind you money doesn't grow on trees, if you want more government spending you're going to have to come up with a way to generate the revenue to cover it.

Higher property taxes? Raise the sales tax? Higher fees when you go to renew your license? Ready.. set.. TAX!
