Heads in the sand representatives

Much like pro-drill candidates probably won't highlight that as part of their resume, it is not particularly popular to highlight a pro-trial bar record. The lions share of his donations are from trial attorneys, so using your logic on Ms. Coley he is much more in the pocket for trial attorneys than he is for drilling.

Thank you for getting me fired up to support Ms. Coley, I am going to be doubling my donation to her and will for now say goodbye. My next politics post will wait until Nov. when I can gloat over the fresh defeat of Mr. Pleat and the seating of House Majority leader John Boehner. You guys can keep telling yourselves that every one else agrees with you or is stupid. Lets see how that works out for you.

I just wonder how many trial lawyers you actually know...and if you had a huge case with an insurance company over a traffic accident or a medical mal practice or a drug that had harmed your child..who you would call.

To blame trial lawyers or doctors for the health care situation is short sighted; to label all trial lawyers as "bad" is the same as generalizing about real estate agents, journalists and used care salespersons...we all do it in moments of sarcasm--but, hopefully, we apply more than sarcasm when making important decisions.

For any native born Floridian not to see the potential risk in any oil drilling off the shores of Florida is worse than short sighted--and to think that just because drilling would occur in our waters, that we would somehow benefit more than others, is uninformed.

For the politicians who are supporting oil drilling off our coast, they are obviously thinking of something other than the well being of the state and our citizens. IMO Rep. Coley needs to do her homework and think about the well being of the area she represents, more than she needs to be thinking about how she will get re-elected.

David Pleat is a one issue candidate, running solely on being against offshore oil drilling in any way, shape, or form. He is distorting his opponents record who has stated that she is open to studying the effects of offshore oil drilling and might support it if it could be done in an environmentally friendly way. If you don't believe me, then head to her campaign website at marticoley.com where she pledges to preserve our environment.

David Pleat is not much more than a ambulance-chasing attorney who has harmed business in South Walton much more than he has helped. Not suprisingly, he is a Democrat with most of his funding coming from the trial attorneys. If you want yet another attorney in your legislature who is openly anti-business during this horrible recession, then by all means vote for David Pleat.

After traipsing through the rhetoric, one issue stands out, Ms. Coley said yes to offshore drilling. Unfortunately, many times, promises mean nothing, but actions do. The American people are not stupid and know that a study is not needed to determine whether or not drilling for oil is environmentally friendly. It is not. People are tired of representatives that have their own agenda and are not standing for it anymore.

Money should be placed into green alternatives: earth, solar, water, and wind. Each area of the U.S. is unique and can utilize the energy sources conducive to that area. We should put our monetary resources into the advancement of clean energy, not trudge backwards through the oil fields.

You mentioned nuclear power as a clean source of energy? I am not an alarmist, but alarms went off. This would introduce more danger into America and be a target for terrorists. I'm trying to figure out whose side you are on. Thank you for clearing up any doubt as to who might be the best candidate and again thank you for your posts.

On a bipartisan note, I am really excited to see the President's stated commitment to nuclear energy. I would love to see 50 more nuclear reactors scattered about less populous regions of the country over the next 20 years. Despite the environmentalists distortions of the dangers of nuclear power, science prevails and we can make as clean a source of energy as we currently can mass produce. Sorry, we just aren't there with wind or solar. It took this energy crunch to open up nuclear as an option, think of all the cheap energy this nation missed out on in the last 40 years due to nuclear alarmists.

If science is prevailing over the dangers of nuclear power, why do you propose 50 reactors be located in less populous regions? the "NIMBY" position destroys credibility in the safety of nuclear power.

There is NOT a way to drill (for either gas or oil) off of Florida's coasts without spills, trash, and major damage to our waters and beaches.

That is all.

I am under the impression that available data shows that drilling in Florida will not lower our gas prices. It is also my understanding that accidents which cause oil spills happen everywhere even with new technology. My understanding is that states that have allowed for drilling haven't seen anywhere near the revenues that Florida has been promised- and their beaches have TAR BALLS. If I was an elected official with a vote I would start with these points. If they can't be refuted then what is the point of doing anymore research before I cast what is obviously the right vote for Florida.

You are 100% correct on all points.

I have some really nice new neighbors. At a dinner party recently they couldn't stop talking about how lucky they feel that they now have a place with such a beautiful beach. And I agree. Near the end of the evening I mentioned that I would be participating in Hands Across the Sand. There was the sound of crickets. They informed me that they were all for the drilling because we needed to stop our dependence on the middle east for oil. I just don't get it. These things aren't mutually exclusive.

Here's a hint. If you want to be energy independent, put your time and money behind the technology and resources that Big Oil is lobbying against.

The majority of our oil does not come from the Middle East.

In order, the top 5 are Canada (20%), Saudi Arabia (12% and the only ME source), Mexico (11%), Nigeria (9.5%), and Venezuela (8%).

You don't cure an addiction by finding a new source to feed your fix. And oil leases owned by Norway and sublet to China will NOT be flowing directly into Florida SUV tanks.

WOW.
I am against drill baby drill and I still bought the soundbyte that we need to stop giving all our money to Middle Eastern countries.

So here is our top ten list-

1. Canada 680,533 million barrels
2. Saudi Arabia 530,245
3. Mexico 514,480
4. Venezuela 419,841
5. Nigeria 394,856
6. Angola 181,215
7. Iraq 177,009
8. Algeria 161,755
9. Ecuador 72,138
10. Kuwait 64,306

This will hopefully be eye opening to anyone who supports drilling on the basis that we need to shed our dependence on the Middle East for oil.

Here is the source of the data in case anyone is interested in fact checking...
