I Dont Think I Can Face Facebook !?#@

New posts
I've seen your friend list. There's more people on it than there are residents of many towns! 762 to be exact. You are one popular chick!!

If you're going to be a smart-arse about it, it's 788. And yes, I know 787 of them. (I accepted one friend-of-a-friend yesterday...sometimes I don't know what to do about those.)

OK..I joined in with the fun?...I feel like some novice from Earth who was beamed into Fellini-esque cyber circus...new friends are coming at me from out of nowhere...people want to know what I am doing RIGHT NOW...some Sowal buds want me to write on their "walls" (wtf, as in graffitti???--jeez)....I now know the real names of many of the Sowallers I chat with daily, and the names of their children, and even the folks they are having affairs with ...I am listening to some original digital music by the nouvea hippie son of a college roomate that I never really even liked to begin with (he did have a nice butt though..the roomate).....H E L P !!!!! (cue Elizabeth Taylor's shattering scream at the end of Suddenly Last Summer when she finds out she was really a gay hag being pimped out by cousin Sebastian... Deep breath, Henry.

Ahhhhh.....I just now closed the (Face)book for tonight and decided to go into my tried and true SoWal cyber community, and to log into my favorite place, The Lounge--the drapes here may smell like swgb's cigarette smoke, but I truly like it in here and feel very much at home.

Sowal is to melatonin what Face Book is to Exctasy....to me, logging off Facebook and logging onto Sowal is like exiting a Manhattan subway and then suddenly finding yourself laying on the beach here on 30A and looking at all the starz....I truly feel that cyber simplicity is Heaven:wub:

PS: (I am wondering now if B.B.'s "Sweetie" is on both MySpace and FaceBook--I won't find out til tomorrow!!) Hhhmmmmmm. Tomorrow.

Thank you for the segue. I just got on myself and have been just waiting for the opportunity to vent my frustrations. I can not say it any better than what has already been said. It's mainly the junkware applications that I have a problem with. I just deleted a bunch about an hour ago. I now present to all of you:

YouTube - Facebook Anthem

Hank - you are a riot and a half!!! my FB experience was nerve wracking with an entire day of friggin emails stuffed into my inbox by the minute requesting friends and other inane things. I cut it off immediately. Decided to just save FB for another day when I can think about how I want to set it up and (most especially) why.

I think it suits some folks perfectly, especially very social folks. Some of us are more private and prefer old fashioned email (remember when email seemed impersonal and inappropriate for some things? it seems kind of quaint now. ha ha).

I am with the scooterbug. I am as "found" as I like to be. I am currently in touch with all my loved ones and many old and new friends, in my own personal (if old fashioned) way, and at my convenience.

I think FB is brilliant for teens and young adults who have a fascination and enjoy today's instant communication culture, fast and furious and total and constant! I've seen teens in action and its exciting stuff for them. I also think its fantastic for highly social people of all ages who thrive on keeping in touch, sharing, and connecting with old friends on a more regular basis. It seems like a perfectly wonderful tool for lots of people I know. Doesn't mean it suits all though. Dang, I have a few friends who barely use the computer for email - they aren't missing one thing, imo.

I was talking to my wise friend today who said he was on FB for a while until he realized that he did not enjoy most of the aspects of FB, found it overwhelmingly TMI and sometimes juvenile. On the other hand, he met the love of his life there... like anything online - you get what you need from it.. we all have our own ways of connecting with others, whether online or off.

Hank - go with what makes you happy. It's YOUR choice my friend! you'll have many friends either way. and from what I've heard from my FB-using friends, once you have your page set up, its not really a big deal to maintain or manage. I'm sure its quite easy once you get in there and get the hang.

thanks for starting this thread. its very timely! not to mention fascinating to see what people are thinking and how they are using this hugely popular social network/tool.

hnooe, step away from the face! Come back towards the sowal!

:wave::lol:

Maybe I should change my status to "Will is suffering from OMB's" and see who besides my Sowal friends know what the freak I'm talking about! :funn:

I am in search of a good reason to create my own personal page on FB where I can express myself, contact a zillion friends from the past, and blog on about embarrassing husband stories, post some personal pix to share with a few (zillion) close friends, etc... (do you know how killed I will be? oh! that may be the exact reason I need to just do it!;-) ... revenge is so sweet!)... on the other hand... no, these are not nearly motivating enough for me to take the plunge...

HOWEVER, the above items by MK and SC may truly be reason enough for me to get started on FB!

Hnooe - please keep us posted on your progress... your comments are priceless!

I've been on for about 8 months and it's been a wonderful reconnection with many long lost friends. What's nice about it is it's short comments - totally different than sowal. Opinions don't seem to matter, no one flames anyone. It's actually quite nice.

Hank, this is too funny....I felt the same way, but you said it so much better!
Thanks for the laugh.

Well, like some of y'all, I was extremely reluctant to do the FB thingy. I never did the myspace thingy. I tried, but I did not like it, so I disconnected it. After much haranguing from some of y'all sowalers, then my family, I decided to try it. I went slow initially. What I found was the security features were excellent. So good in fact that my own sister could not find me to extend a friendship request.

No one other than mutual friends can see pictures. No friends of friends. The only feature I do not like is when someone comments on a picture and that picture shows up on that person's wall for all their other friends to see. I haven't figured out a way for that to be policed.

Other than the above, what I found was it was a wonderful way to stay abreast of what people were doing in their lives on a more personal level short of the e-mailing bit. I also am not great at calling people to shoot the breeze and some of my non-sowal friends have been ignored since I started sowaling, so some of them, at my urging and trusting that the security was excellent, signed up for FB so we can stay more connected. Most haven't, figuring, like I did initially, that it is for students. That's cool. But, I have made new friends, reconnected with old ones, and extended family who I did not talk to daily. Now everything is in one place to go to ...email, etc.

and Toots- you can set it up so you don't get an email for everything, only friendship requests. I too was initially overwhelmed with emails when someone threw a snowball or wanted to kidnap you to Russia or Cancun. :floor:

(Sorry you nappers, but I tried it and I still do not understand how that gig works)

I am enjoying some of the features, like the word game challenges and such, even the super poke. Did y'all know quai and quahog were words? and the scrabble dictionary takes the word titi?
