I am one of many aliens who worked through the tired system of US immigration policies for over 5 years, LEGALLY and spent hard earned $$$$ on lawyers who were hired just in case something goes wrong - you can obviously try navigate through all the paperwork yourself and save a bundle and hope to God that you fill every line of every form correctly because if you do not, you get the whole thing back months later and another lengthy delay. I was told on numerous accounts that my situation was harder than others and that if I had come here illegally it would have been much easier for me - nothing complicated about my situation but I can tell you that I am educated - have a highschool degree, a bachelor of art and 2 masters, speak and write fluent english, and tried to go through the system the legal way. It was a horrible, demeaning and belittling process - immigration officials were often racist and had tremendous, hardly restrained prejudices, made all sorts of assumptions about me and everytime I was questioned, fingerprinted, intimidated, spoken rudely to, glared at, ignored, etc.. all I could think of was: If this is the way the INS treats educated, english speaking immigrants who are trying hard to navigate through the system legally, how the hell must they be treating the non-educated and non english speaking immigrants????? I saw so many countless others treated so poorly and despicably that I cannot say that I blame those trying to circumvent the whole ordeal- and make no mistake about it, it was an ordeal. Everytime you come into the country there is a BIG sign that reads, "YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE TREATED FAIRLY AND WITH RESPECT BY INS OFFICIALS" - I can tell you many people who worked at INS must have never seen that sign or bothered to read it. And I was no exception as i encountered the same fatigued behavior in 3 states.
I am not sure what my point is or how I feel about so many illegals here wanting to stay and make a better life for themselves but nothing will change without considerable change from US policies.
