Some if not most of the top anchors are reporters too. Peter Jennings was a prime example of that -- he really did his homework and he was the driving force behind the way World News Tonight chose its stories. His successors have done a fine job following in his footsteps -- look at poor Bob Woodruff and what happened to him while going out there to report the news.
Anderson Cooper and Brian Williams, heck even Shepard Smith sometimes, do a great job also. You may not like their personalities or their delivery, but they have their sources and really do their behind the scenes homework.
I think Katie has potential to be a great one. She has such an easy manner and a way with people, which is important. She and Bob Costas are so much alike in so many ways because they have wonderful senses of humor, and can morph from one topic or genre to the next while making (most) viewers feel comfortable. It is a rare talent. I would like to see Costas do more serious work on a regular basis. He could certainly rise to the occasion.
