Unplugged

Beach Fanatic
Paula, Shelly - enjoyed your impressions of Maine on another thread - I started a tangent, so thought I better move it

I grew up between Camden and Popham Beach. I enjoy hearing SoWal reflections of my home state. Kurt - if you haven't been, it's a photographer's paradise.

Unplugged, I always say Maine is one of my favorite places I've visited (except for the black fly part). Had a good friend from there, so I visited her a few times. One of my most vivid memories is one summer going to a parade--it was for a seafood festival, the town's name is escaping me--and the shriners rode around in little lobster boats! I almost died; loved that!

I would love to hear an itinerary for a week or so. Where to go, stay, dine, etc.
Consider flying into Manchester, NH on Southwest, or Portland. Rent a convertible and just work your way North along Coastal Route 1. Special points of interest would be Portland's 'Old Port' section, Ogunquit, Bar Harbor, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Freeport (LL Bean). While these are the more commercialized areas, you can venture off the beaten path in-between each town.

Peapod, Shelly & Paula will have some great suggestions also.

I would recommend B & B's VS Hotel/ Motels. Two of my favorites that really set the standard are The Harbor View Inn ask for Joe - and The Tipsy Butler.

August is a great time to visit Bethel - very, very scenic. Do try to get to the coast if you have time.

My friend worked here: Black Point Inn

Hitchhiking worked well for me. I traveled the state by other people's cars:rolling:. Walking ain't bad either. While I was in Baxter State Park, hitching a ride with some young folks in a Big @ss Cadillac, we were driving on a dirt road (I felt like I was in the Dukes of Hazzard does the north) and we saw a Moose and her little Moose. Those were my first and only sitings of Moose (or is it Meese? :floor:) and even the baby seemed much bigger than the Big @ss Caddy in which we were riding.

Plenty of Blueberries growing the wild up in Maine. Yummy. Blueberry Quiche, Blueberry Pie, Blueberry Cobbler, Blueberry Pancakes, just plain old delicious Blueberries. Did I say, "Yummy!?"
