I picked my first blueberries ever in Maine. I think I was about 10 years old.
August is the perfect time to go!
My son occasionally hitchhikes in France, and I do worry, but usually he is with a buddy. I hitchiked myself 30 years ago. I guess some of us just have to take more chances than others, and hope that we can take care of ourselves if things go amiss.
Cil, I raked Blueberrys as youngster - hard labor for young kids - but it kept us off the streets and out of trouble

Peapod: the Pat's Pizza I knew of was in Orono - a favorite student hang out near the University of Maine campus. GREAT Pizza. The O.O.B. location may be a franchise store :idontno:
Well, I'm not sure where we were when we ate at Pat's; I was thinking it was the same day as OOB, but who knows. :idontno:
Got it! It was Yarmouth, same day as the Yarmouth Clam Festival with the Shriners in the lobster boats! The fog is clearing...

I visited Maine about 18 years ago, in Sept. It was ABSOLUTELY stunning!! On one side of the road were the RED trees and on the other were the waves crashing up on the rocks. It is one of my most vivid memories! Would LOVE to go back someday. One the same trip, we visited several other New England states. In Mass, we went to the mountains and stopped in at a little inn for an afternoon cocktail. The waitress came to take our order and my friend, in her VERY TEXAS accent asked for a "crown and seven". The waitress couldn't understand what she was saying so she asked her to repeat. She again asked for the cocktail in her VERY TEXAS accent. The waitress just looked at her...:idontno: , then my friend said, in her VERY TEXAS accent, "you know Crown Royal"! The waitress then said, in her very BOSTON accent, "Oh, you want a Crab Roll!". My friend ordered a BEER.

Boy, that inn looked great.

We like to be near Portland because that's where my husband's mother lives so it's easy to visit from there. For ease, I'd fly into the airport in Portland and go north. A convertable would be great. I'm with Mermaid, NO hitch-hiking, SJ!

Around Portland you have:

The old Port area on the Portland harbor (nice shops, restaurants, bar, upscale but not stuffy atmosphere).
Beaches -- Crescent Beach is one I remember but it's not the only one
Also consider visiting some of the islands. There's Peak's Island right off of Portland. Then Monhegan Island I think is a bit north.
I also like the towns of York and Kennebunkport (The Bush family's compound) near Portland.
I think Popham Beach is about 2 hours or so north.
Rockport and Camden are a bit farther.
I didn't go farther north than that, but I've heard northern Maine is awesome. Of course, the farther north you go, the less crowded it will be.

Look at VRBO for Maine Coast and you'll see some nice places come up and get some ideas about what goes on in these areas. I think places along the coast book up pretty quickly. You want to be sure there's really a beach nearby if you like the beach because Maine coast can mean a rocky coast (beautiful, but not for swimming).

we went to bar harbor and acadia national park several years ago and had a wonderful time. stopped at the ll bean store on the way. in bar harbor we stayed at the inn at bay ledge which is basicly on the edge of a cliff, was a very nice b+b, owners very nice.
