My Parents Are Acting Like Children!

It is now a cat. 3.
Mermaid, do your parents live in a condo, hopefully? And what floor? And, if they happen to live on the 1st or 2nd floor, tell them to make arrangements to join some of their neighbors to stick it out together. Also, how far away are they from the water or a canal? Depending on their location, they might not actually be in that much danger. I'm not trying to worry you any more than you already are, but since they are being stubborn (& a smidge careless) at least have them hook-up with their neighbors.
(Did you try screaming and crying??!!)

I tried sulking but it didn't have much effect. My mother called just now before going to bed and I told her we all thought she and my father were stupid to stay in Naples. I also told her I publicly complained about her! (I might not be talking to her about Wilma but after she reads this SHE might not be talking to me. )

But to answer your question--yes, they're in a condo and they're east of Rte 75 so at least that's in their favor.

We'll see what tomorrow brings. I made my mother promise that once they had their first hurricane under their belts, they wouldn't try to ride out any future hurricanes, that once is enough!

Go have another drink and get some sleep. Remember this exchange when your kids plead with you to get out of SoWal! I'll "see' you in the morning!

It's morning now. Go to floridadisaster.org for info on specific neighborhoods.

Mermaid....I feel so sorry for you...you must have had an incredibly restless night. Have you talked to your parents this morning? I imagine many of the phone lines may be down. I'm praying that they're safe and well.

Good morning everyone! I've been glued to the weather channel. I got an e-mail from my brother-in-law. He called my parents because all their daughters are still too angry to speak to them. As of 9 am Naples time, they were in bed reading, "not in a pile of rubble, so tell everyone not to worry."

I have this crazy theory about why my parents stayed when they really should have evacuated. Other than the obvious, that they wanted to see what a hurricane was like. :bang: I think it's about mold. You see, the A/C went out in their neighbor's condo. These people had already returned to their home up North, so the place went for a month without air. When they came back, the condo was covered in mold. The stench was awful and the expense of cleaning it up was even worse. These people lost their condo for a great amount of time because it had to be gutted, near enough. I think my parents felt if they evacuated and lost electricity (which they already have, anyway) and then couldn't return to Naples in a timely manner, then they'd have run the risk of becoming homeless. That the mold would have turned them out even as much as any collateral hurricane damage. So, if you think that way, you're damned if leave, and damned if you don't.

I think I can soften my frustration with my parents if that's the way their minds were working. If I can get through to them, I'll ask.

I'm glad they are OK! Maybe now you can just be angry at them, not angry AND worried!

I think you need to go to the beach and recuperate from this stress>

Y'know, jgard, every time I'm in a lousy mood my husband looks at me and says "someone could use some beach time." He's right! I devour all the photos that kurt and SJ post (don't we all?). It's the next best thing to being there!

Merman is very wise indeed.;-)

All your good thoughts paid off because the two of them are fine. I told my mother that angels surely protect the fools of this world. She just laughed.

My father spent the afternoon after Wilma cleared out on the golf course behind their condo. No, not playing, but collecting the golf balls that Wilma had dislodged from the bark and branches of the palm trees. These depression era babies are a thrifty sort and my father was nothing short of gleeful as he collected 60+ balls. He's a happy camper tonight.

My mother said the skies last night were absolutely spectacular with the thundering and lightening. She said they saw colors like blue and green and purples that they'd never seen before. Interesting what a major storm system will do. I told her she only needs to see a sight like that once, the next time, evacuate!
