Mermaid, do your parents live in a condo, hopefully? And what floor? And, if they happen to live on the 1st or 2nd floor, tell them to make arrangements to join some of their neighbors to stick it out together. Also, how far away are they from the water or a canal? Depending on their location, they might not actually be in that much danger. I'm not trying to worry you any more than you already are, but since they are being stubborn (& a smidge careless) at least have them hook-up with their neighbors.
(Did you try screaming and crying??!!)
I tried sulking but it didn't have much effect. My mother called just now before going to bed and I told her we all thought she and my father were stupid to stay in Naples. I also told her I publicly complained about her! (I might not be talking to her about Wilma but after she reads this SHE might not be talking to me.
But to answer your question--yes, they're in a condo and they're east of Rte 75 so at least that's in their favor.
We'll see what tomorrow brings. I made my mother promise that once they had their first hurricane under their belts, they wouldn't try to ride out any future hurricanes, that once is enough!
I think it's about mold. You see, the A/C went out in their neighbor's condo. These people had already returned to their home up North, so the place went for a month without air. When they came back, the condo was covered in mold. The stench was awful and the expense of cleaning it up was even worse. These people lost their condo for a great amount of time because it had to be gutted, near enough. I think my parents felt if they evacuated and lost electricity (which they already have, anyway) and then couldn't return to Naples in a timely manner, then they'd have run the risk of becoming homeless. That the mold would have turned them out even as much as any collateral hurricane damage. So, if you think that way, you're damned if leave, and damned if you don't.
I devour all the photos that kurt and SJ post (don't we all?). It's the next best thing to being there!
I told my mother that angels surely protect the fools of this world. She just laughed.
