... for my sister-in-law. Her birthday is Thursday so I would have to mail it Monday. She is recently widowed, is living with her mom outside New Orleans and taking care of her two little kids. I'd like to get her something that will brighten her day. She didn't get any presents on Mother's Day because her children are small, her husband is gone and apparently no one else thought to get her anything, including us. :(

I don't want to do something exceedingly practical, just something that will make her smile. But what? She is in her late '30s and doesn't get much time to herself, though she does enjoy going out with her friends since her mom can watch the kids in the evening. She is not working right now. She plans to go back to school but won't start until January at least. Any ideas?

how about a gift basket that has nice body lotions and spa type things for long soaks in the tub after the kids are asleep ?

Thanks Audie -- I like your line of thinking! I don't think she is a tub soaker (though I am not sure since when she lived near us she did not have a nice tub to soak in) but maybe I can go to Sephora and get her an assortment of fancy, trendy beauty items, just for fun, and put them in a little decorative basket. She is a shopper and would probably enjoy the surprise. She is also a Nordstrom addict. But I don't want to get her a gift card.

TFT, you can also slip in a few other nice small items like a pair of earrings or a bracelet, and maybe a little box of Godiva chocolate. You know, good girlie stuff that we all love receiving.

You are a thoughtful sister-in-law to look after her like this and want to make her birthday special. It has to be a very tough one for her.

Thanks Mermaid. More great ideas. I don't know how she's really doing. It's good that she moved back to her hometown instead of down here, since she needed more help than hubby and I alone could give her, but we were used to having them relatively close and seeing them every other week or so. Now that the entire operation has been transferred, I feel a little helpless. :idontno: Wish we could take her out to dinner and then out for some funn. But I know her girlfriends will be taking care of her. :clap_1:

find out where a good massuse is and send her a massage...ahhhhhhhh nothing better!

good idea mermy - yummmmm godiva chocolate covered cherries ! does she watch movies ? you could do a movie type basket with her favorite kinds of movies, snacks, etc.
