Parent of a Teenager!

New posts
Congrats on the new phase. Enjoy it because it is over too fast, well not on some days :bang: . My husband gave me the best advice when our first daughter was 13...."You will NOT have the last word, so do not try. Say what you need to say and stop." His philosophy is that you cannot argue with someone if they will not argue back. Worked wonderful with both children.

As of today, I am in the "big leagues". My baby, Will, is 13 today. I can't believe I have a teenager, since I refuse to let go of a part of being one myself.

I have been taking notes on every post regarding teenage children and stories about your adult children too, since those days aren't far off :(

He just looked at me and said, "Mom- only 3 more years and I'll be driving!"

I need to steady myself.
Happy birthday, Will!
Steady, steady, jdarg--you can do it!
By the time I'm in the same place in April, you'll be ready to talk me through it!

Don't worry...there is a little syndrome that attacks all graduating seniors. It happens generally at the end of the spring semester, gets full blown in the summer and by the time they leave to go to college you will be on your knees...giving thanks! This syndrome turns normally mild-mannered students into freakin' lunatics. It is caused by nerves and anxiety and is reversible. It's all in God's plan to make the leaving of your little bird from the nest... tolerable!!! Good Luck and God Bless!

Amen! They do return to the fold eventually!

Not one. I think it may be soon like maybe the weekend. But, I'm not getting my hopes up. Daughter seems to be resigned to a long and drawn out stay. Stepmom is back today since our family Dr advised we should avoid contact until at least the weekend, due to our whatever the heck we had over the weekend.

Thank goodness for the wife-in-law!

Thanks, SS. I have been told that by the time Christmas break is over next year, I will be asking "When is it you are going back to school?" Hope you enjoy having your "chillens" home for Thanksgiving.

For some, it's the "curfew" problem. Our male spawn is a crusty old soul and likes his sleep, so he's always in early. My friends have told me about their chillrens staying out all night after being in college for a while. I guess you have to decide what your boundaries are....I think I'd have to adopt the..."This is our home and while you are here you must go by our rules."

There is hope...my husband's youngest son scared his nice mom and us to death for years. We had no idea what or where he would be, ultimately, because he seemed unable to find his niche. Whatever was "in" was what we was, ranging from skunked Mohawk to "Fame" extra with the gloves, even a short stint as a Gant-shirted yuppie in our Newport Beach days. (Those are not the scariest scenarios  .) He dropped out of college for commercial art school, moved to L.A. and became part of the movie scene, now is married and has his own business in L.A. Very successful and works too hard. He with the "perfect" older brother is our kid who spent his whole teenage life trying to be Alice Cooper and ended up as Ward Cleaver. One day they refuse to walk within 20 feet of you unless it's time to pay the check, then one day they take you out for a nice dinner and insist on picking up the check and the tip. (And a waiter has to pick you up off the floor!) Hang in there, parents of teenagers, because it gets a lot better. P.S. - They are also in line for payback soon enough with their own teenagers! :funn:
