Having grown up an hour south of Montgomery, Monkeytown meant something very politcally INcorrect and very offensive. No one in my family acknowledged that but lots of racists would use that reference to Montgomery. I still shudder when I hear it being used! I'm really hoping that has changed now!! (And it may very well be a CB term!!)

I'm not a racist. I don't think black people are monkeys. I've just always called it that.

I guess we could start calling SoWal HonkeyTown. :floor:

I sure don't think you are a racist either. But having lived away from the south for 25 years, in an area that's extremely politically correct (almost painfully so) these references just hit me right between the eyes. And everyone knew that's what it meant.
I'm all about inclusion of everyone, everywhere.

Although it stunned me to see at least two black couples walking on the bike path on 30-A last weekend. This place is a bit (or maybe more than a bit) lily-white and "gentrified," as someone on this board stated, so definitely HonkeyTown works. I rarely even see Asians here.

Well, growing up IN Montgomery it was a widely used term. No one ever used it to be politically incorrect. My fav has always been Fungomery but that's just me.
