pesticide spray

For The Health Of It located in Blue Mountain Beach seems to have taken the lead in this fight. A petition is available and Susanne and Ed are forming a board to address this issue. If anyone is willing to work for the changes that are needed, please contact Susanne at 267-0558. Also please stop by to sign the petition.

I finally caleed and have put our names on the petition. Easy and painless....unlike the stuff being sprayed all over God's creation!

Dear Friends:

Come join us for the informative talk:

?The Deadly ?Cide? of Pesticides.?

The time and place is:

3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 26 at the old Point Washington General Store

(at the entrance to Eden State Park across from the historic Post Office on School Road).

We need to know the dangers of the chemicals being used in our community and what are safer alternatives. Please invite others to hear this topic of vital importance. Hopefully, this will give us the momentum we need to move toward a healthier environment for us and our families.

Good Health,

Lite refreshments will be served.

Once again, folks are shooting the symptom, not the cause! You have no idea what life was like before the Mosquito Control! We used to have to dress in long sleeves, long pants, boots, gloves, hat, and scarf to travel on foot in some areas. Dad was chairman of the Mosquito Control board and he and his colleagues did extensive research on our insect problem. Dog flies do not breed here, the north wind brings them. They can be vicious, particularly if you have allergies. They will pursue you and bite you if they can. Mosquitoes, as well as gnats and roaches, breed in low lying wet areas. Mosquitoes carry many different kinds of diseases, including Malaria, West Nile, and Aids, among many others. My grandparents almost died in Santa Rosa Beach from Malaria because of the Mosquitoes. Dad and his colleagues discovered a safe, non toxic method of controlling and attempting to eradicate the Mosquito, Minnows. They eat the larvae, thereby eliminating the problem. The results were successful, until someone (jokingly) put them on the endangered species list! The way you get Minnows to eat the larvae, is to provide flowing water for the Minnows to survive. To provide this water, and to eliminate the stagnate water (which also creates other problems), is to dig ditches and dry off the land. To control the water flow through salt marshes, i.e. digging a canal around the outside of the marsh, then digging cross ditches through it so the tidal water would flow freely twice a day and not get blocked by debris. Opinion today however, is completely opposite of what it was then, either because of ignorance, or some radical plan that if it gets bad enough people will leave and land will revert back to it?s original state. That plan is flawed not only that it is vengeful, but it will never be as it was. The balance is off; man has added and removed components necessary to restore it.
I am persuaded that there are other toxins that must be considered before judging that the plane is the culprit to your symptoms. This area has many allergens; anyone who is sensitive will have the symptoms. Before you shoot yourself in the foot, do some research with more of an open mind and with people who actually know what they are talking about!

Fact is that the cause for all of this was because of a mass spraying of poison by airplanes for not mosquitos, but Dog Flies, to which I have never heard of anyone being allergic. The allergic reaction to which you refer are caused by the Deer Fly, not the Dog Fly. They are not spraying to kill the Deer Flies on the beach. The Deer Flies do not like the full Sun, instead they look for shady areas.

On another note regarding the mosquitos. The Mosquito Control people are not spraying minnows into the air around my house. They are spraying poison and they do not even give me a say in the matter. In some respect, it is no different than having a truck or plane fill the air with cigarette smoke. At least with cigarette smoke, I can leave a place where people are smoking. How does one leave the mass spraying of poison?:idontno:

On another note, how do you know what I know about mosquitos in this area in the past? To assume that you do is a big mistake.

First, because you have never heard of it, does that mean it doesn?t exist? Are you all knowing? Yes, the Dog Fly plane sprays for Dog Flies! Perhaps the poisons would not be necessary if people would eliminate the standing water on their property! Mosquitoes can breed in ? cup of water! A leaf! The larvae can lay dormant until the next rainfall. This is why we cut the grass, and remove the big leaves! What do cigarettes have to do with Mosquitoes and Dog Flies? My father smoked forever, and had a heart attack and died in 1975; my mother lived separated from him since 1969, didn?t smoke, and died of lung cancer in 1987! Lastly, who said I know what you think? If the shoe fits, where it! The persons making the decisions concerning spraying usually know what happens if they don?t spray. Most of the old timers I know appreciate the spraying because they remember what it was like before they started the program.

Florida Girl - who are the ignorant ones here - those people that settled where ther is a lot of swampland and malaria, or the ones that killl all the wetlands by digging ditches? Truth is - the ditches were dug to creat dry (but very low) land for people to graze cattle, farm, and develop in other ways. All the natural areas were drained in the name of "progress".

All the mosquito ditches around here are stagnant most of the time. And they would have lots of frogs, minnows, and even small fish in them to eat skeeter larvae if we weren't spraying poison in them all the time.

What could be more ignorant than covering our lives in poison? I prefer to where long pants and sleeves.

The people making the decisions to spray are employees of the people. I hope that they are soon working at another job.

Perhaps you should go somewhere where they don't have Mosquito control! Although, most likely it would be in another country. Then perhaps you'ld know what it was like.

I do not have standing water in my yard nor in the drainage ditches in front of my house, yet my yard gets sprayed without my consent.

The reason for my comparison with smoking, is that I do not smoke. However, if someone else chooses to smoke, I have the choice to not be around them and their smoke. However, I do not have a choice to not be affected by the poison spray that is being mass sprayed over my property by mosquito control.

By the way, second hand smoke kills many people each year.

I know what it is like to be without poison sprayers and having my property sprayed should be at least a choice I get to make, not something that is forced upon me by my gov't.

I've been to many countries that most people here would not consider liveable. The mosquito control here is a waste of money. I agree with you about containers in people's yards. Skeeters are much worse in most neighborhoods than in the swamps. Especially low income neighborhoods with yards full of junk.
