Petition To Protect Soldier Monuments

New posts
SoWal is a uniquely beautiful place. I was warned about the surrounds by a Realtor about 15 years ago. He said it's a great beach, but you have to remember where you are. "Every mile off the beach you could roughly calculate a ten point drop in IQ until you crossed the bridge, then all bets were off". He told me northward "a good portion of the population still thought the spirit of the Civil War was still going on." And he we are, it's 2015.

More of that "moral superiority" I mentioned that you beat me hands down in Teresa. Roflmao.

You live an SoWal correct? How often do you come to the County seat to be offended by what is done here? My guess is...you don't because you have an annex nearby.

The Community of North Walton did decide the flag issue.
It's still my County seat. But I don't dwell on a flag I don't see. Still I know it's there. It's done. Our county decided.

The monument at the Courthouse was dedicated by the women of Walton County. It was first erected in 1871 on the old Courthouse grounds at Valley Church and later moved to Euchee Anna because it was the county seat. It was moved one more time only because Walton County became the County Seat. It was erected in memory of the county's war dead and doesn't need to be moved at all. It has been a part of Walton County history for 144 years!

The flag, added 51 years ago in 1964 has flown beside it, also in memory of the County's war dead and was never an issue until 2002 when Uhlfelder first got his shorts twisted over it and tried it have it removed because it's not "politically correct". What he didn't expect when he attempted it this time was the backlash by people born and raised here who don't share his views and he rallied the Community of North Walton County to protect was is rightfully their history and heritage. True blood Walton Countians whose family members names adorn that monument have an absolute right to protect their heritage and those of us who moved here later or migrated here recently, have absolutely no LEGAL right to tell them that it's not "politically correct" regardless of how its viewed. It's not their history! Its not their heritage! Its not their place! Its not their business! Its not their flag! It doesn't fly in SoWal! Its not their monument!

Many in SoWal, and "real outsiders" (those who don't live here) along with the Uhlfelder's were offered a compromise but that wasn't good enough! So, the BCC decided how it was gonna be and people aren't happy with that either. Well, guess what? There are 50 other states and lord knows how many other counties in the US that they are welcome to call home!!! If it offends them so badly...the road that led them in will lead them out.
your heritage is embarrassing. you sound like a person backed up in a corner.

An SoWal is still part of Walton County and OUR community!

I didn't write our history Bob. I simply told you it diverges from your reality because your arguments are not based on fact!

:)
Lets talk about the history you can't change Bob!

If killing lots of people is part of your criteria for judging evil then Abraham Lincoln is pretty evil. He just happened to be on the "right" side of history. Andrew Jackson killed millions of Native Americans including women and children and literally stole millions of acres of land from them. Jackson perfected the art of "ethnic cleansing". Harry Truman ordered the US military to drop atom bombs on Japan that literally incinerated millions of CIVILIAN men women and children that also crippled/mutilated many more even though Japan was willing to surrender. William McKinley's "take no prisoners, kill and burn them all" resulted in tens of thousands of Filipino deaths and thousands more in the concentration camps that they were herded to. James Buchanan sided with the South in regard to slavery and colluded with the Supreme Court which set the stage for the civil war.

More recently, George Bush invaded Iraq under false pretenses (WOMD's) resulting in the deaths of thousands of US troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi citizens. James Polk and his "Manifest Destiny" resulted in the death of 25,000 Mexicans and the theft of Southwest North America. Franklin Roosevelt for the imprisonment of 100,000 Japanese Americans for simply "looking Asian". Lyndon Johnson for expansion of the Vietnam war while lying to the American people about the reason and prospects for the war. Richard Nixon further expanded that war and illegally spied on Americans. Last but certainly not least Dwight D. Eisenhower for authorizing the overthrow of the Iranian Gov. resulting in countless political murders which gave rise to Muslim extremism.

Evil has never bedded down with honor you say? HAHAHAHAHA!

P.S. It is not my heritage. I simply agreed with those who are trying to protect their's from folks like you simply because you're offended.

Misty: I asked you if you believe that the Confederacy was based on slavery, and you threw out that same old rhetoric about revisionist history. I said you should research the "Cornerstone Speech" and since you refused to, here is the crux of that speech:
On March 21, 1861, Alexander Stephens, the vice president of the Confederacy, gave a speech declaring the principles of the Confederacy. The most famous quote from that speech said "Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery -- subordination to the superior race -- is his natural and normal condition."

It's real simple: we all feel sorry for the men that died in the Civil War. It was a terrible tragedy played out with stupidity and cruelty by both sides, but, in the end, the root cause of all the senseless death and destruction was the Confederacy's defense of slavery. This is not revisionist history. These are words uttered by the founding fathers of the Confederacy.

What do you want from me LVT? If you're asking me to agree with what Stephens said as a reason for the flag to be removed from the Courthouse the answer is no. Do I agree he said it? Yes. Is that what it means to the people who appeared at the BCC meeting to stand against the "remove it" crowd? Absolutely not.

There is allot of our history that has caused allot of senseless death and destruction but none of it rests on anything we (as a collective) have personally done. The American flag was also flying when he gave that speech and we still wave that flag as proudly today as we have done in all other historical wars where hundreds of thousands of people were massacred, imprisoned, tortured and treated inhumanely..

You and others who agree with you want to attach your own social agenda to it...like the KKK and various other Nazi groups who have used and associated it with racism and I refuse to feed into that idiot philosophy. I also believe that those associations are way more racist than even the Confederates had in mind.

Those words were uttered by one (NOT ALL) of the founding fathers and that is the part of your revisionist history I do not agree with.
