Once again I tried to give the Walton Sun a chance, and once again I am sad trees died to print it.

Once you got past the 2 hatchet articles on the Rep (news flash: no employer can publicly say exactly why someone was terminated, just that they were unsatisfactory) there were only a few original articles ........... and someone sneering at the Olympics.

Sorry, Ron Hart, I and many others (87 million tuned in Sunday BTW) didn't get the memo that the Winter Olympics were just for "gay men and elite northeasterners," that watching them was comparable to being "one Oprah or Lifetime show away from getting a cat" and that the only thing resembling a "real sport" is hockey.

The 82 countries participating are not just there for a "pillow fight among unimportant Nordic countries" or to "parade in" so we could see who to "invade next" but because of national pride and the importance of setting aside our differences every 4 years to come together and celebrate athleticism, hard work, and triumph.

Yes, I'll grant you that curling is a bit odd, but as far as the events go, I am willing to bet you couldn't do 99% of what these "non-athletes" are doing at even 1/10 of their speed.

Go sneer at something else and leave the Olympics to the millions of people around the world who actually know enough to enjoy watching them.

I can't read Hart or that Dentist they have either.

Its just my opinion but the Sun has gone steadily downhill since Gwen Break left. Ron Hart is only a columnist and should be taken with a grain of salt. The other newspaper travesty in Walton County is the Beach Breeze. Their release of their previous editor was a step in the wrong direction and immediately fostered the cancellation of my subscription.

I'm fairly certain that this diatribe against the Olympics complete with gay bashing (I won't bore everyone with a long list of Olympic Gold Medal holding homosexuals) is nothing more than an effort at causing a stir and desperately trying to save a dieing relic.

I'm betting they would be more concerned if their circulation weren't up. Seems like the removal of the old Editor was a step in the right direction.

Oh, I know (hence my subscription to the Defuniak Herald) - but slamming the Olympics and gay bashing athletes goes far beyond the usual unreadable pablum of social calendar reporting/local squabbles/recycled content that is now the Sun norm.

Andy, I know that the value of the paper is in the eye of the reader, but believe me when I tell you the former editor relied heavily on internet crap for 'inspiration'. I will not accuse him of plagarism, but I did find it funny that he ran a list of quotes (last year in editorial space) attributed to Abe Lincoln meant to uphold conservative values and individualism. Ironically, about 10 years or so ago, I remember Rush Limbaugh bemoaning the same list as so many of the quotes were bogus and nearly everyone felt compelled to forward it to him when they recieved it. He said that on a daily basis his email was groaning under the weight of the crap. Limbaugh had to install a blocker in his email inbox that would reject anything in the title regarding "Lincoln quotes". And the former editor based an editorial on the same bogus list just last year. That is pathetic; based on some of his comments regarding new media I can comfortably speculate he would have run the paper into the ground.

Just my two cents. You might try the paper again, I really enjoy it.

That is why you and I so seldom agree on things. Their circulation went down by one and I'm sure it didn't matter to them since my discussion with their publisher was anything but pleasant and courteous. SWGB, I don't post for your benefit or concurrence. I post so that others who have an open mind can see the other side of a picture. That is my perogative as long as I'm civil about it and I plan to be so. So when you prick at me, expect me to prick back. Oh, and it should be obvious that a lot of political angst was involved in the change of editors. So be it. Afterall, its Walton County, isn't it?

You might then explain to me why he was there for over five years? I know of no journalist who has either been misled on facts or misquoted someone in their careers. I am glad you enjoy the paper but I'll pass, thank you.
