Ralph's administration wasn't as transparent as Mike's, we had no clue what went on for 8 long years unless he was getting sued or an auditor found a huge error. I appreciate Mike's openess, even if it makes it look like there is trouble at the office. Well...there was. Not much came out of Ralph's office but rumors, except the sexual harassment, firing or demoting a pregnant woman (or 2 ) without cause, and some huge accounting mistakes that were caught by an auditor and made public. What is happening at the Sheriff's office isn't the Sheriff's doing, it's the staff, and he seems to be weeding them out pretty well.

Also, please bear in mind that Sheriff Atkinson did not completely clean house when he came in. Many of his staff have been there for a long time and as long as they accomplish their jobs efficently and professionally, rightly so. He is doing a good job so far. Give credit where credit is due.

Andy, I think the point was that the people who have been in trouble recently were people who were brought into the department by the Sheriff. Just because we like someone personally does not change the fact that, to quote Harry Truman, "The buck stops here." In this case the buck stops at the top. Honestly, if ralphie had had any of these problems we would all have been beside ourselves with negative comments.

Let me give you some information you may not want to hear. I don't know Sheriff Atkinson well enough to like him or dislike him. I only know from all I observe that he is doing a very good job.
On another note. If "ralphie" had had any of these "problems" we would not be beside ourselves with negative comments because we would never have heard about them. After his first term he did a lousy job and, I for one, am glad he's gone. Oh, and one more thing. I didn't vote for Mike Atkinson but you can be damn well assured that if he runs again I will next time.

Andy, all of us think we "know" politicians and judge them for a variety of reasons, some legitimate, some not. I don't "know" the President but I say all the time I do not "like" him. When I am talking about liking and disliking politicians I am not talking about a personal level but a political one. Who knows,if I knew Obama on a personal level he and I would probably drink a beer and shoot a round of golf or hoops and enjoy the company.
As to the sheriff, how is he doing a "good job?" My point was that we "like" him primarily because he is not the last Sheriff. And his administration compares favorably to the past one. But I really cannot think of anything that would lead me to say that he is doing a "good job." Of course you may know more about it because I must admit I don't pay as much attention to that office as I do national and state issues these days. But I do know that seemingly every time I look at a paper someone in that office is in trouble and on at least one occasion the spokesman for the department plainly lied to the press about the circumstances of a captains departure. I don't remember reading where the spokesman was repremanded and that is not my definition of a "good job." And I plainly remember when Johnson's spokesman lied about him attending a cooking school many of us had alot of negative comments about the situation. I am at least trying to be consistent with my comments.

If you want to live up to the standards of the OCSO, you've got to try harder. I mean Walton hasn't even had a felony indictment lately, much less the gambling trips to Vegas on the county dime or the sheriff putting up his mistress in a half million dollar waterfront condo.

Okaloosa is in a league by itself. The Graft and Corruption Hall of Fame. The really funny thing is that instead of cleaning house the informed voters of Okie-dokie County are going to elect the fox to guard the henhouse. No other place I know of even comes close to the insanity that goes on.

The good old boys keep voting for their own, and the active duty military folks aren't engaged in the process because they're going to be out of here in less than three years or are registered to vote somewhere else.

And the state really doesn't help either. First it was the interim sheriff pretty much refusing to properly clean house, leaving behind some people who got mid-five figures in the bonus scheme and who were never asked to pay it back. And then Crist schedules a special election rush job to replace Sansom in such a way that it seemed tailored to make sure baby Gaetz and his $500K campaign budget raised 90% outside county lines gets his state House seat just like his daddy wanted him to inherit it.

Things get crazy in Walton County sometimes but nothing compares to what goes on in Okie-dokie County.
