I watched the episode again. I think Tony is in purgatory. I read that in order to move on from purgatory you must admit your sins and then repent. Tony has invented this alternate reality to keep from admitting his sins on earth. That is why he can't leave he has the wrong ID. He asks who am I and where am I going and the girl says to him join the club. That is because everyone there is in the same boat. They deny who they are and cannot leave until they admit their sins.
I was lying there last night trying to figure it out. Also I think there is significance about the hole in his stomach, open wounds need to heal and something about everyone seeing it out in the open. Like things have to be seen before the wound can be closed. Also it secretes poison. Why else would this be put in the show. In real life they would excused the family when they were changing the dressing. Also the significance of the religious people Dalai lama? I thought that might has something to do with religion and the circle of life which the dali lama believe in smacking him in the face ( remember the guy smacked him) and humiliation, shock and dismay of where he ended up.( he was so shocked they could smack him and get away with it) Also when he asked about the place he was at to the bartender. The bartender said something like this place is dead. Also, The helicopters over head. Could mean that the bright light of the hospital shown in the beginning is coming to get him to take him back to his real life. He would envision it as helicopters in his mob life watching him, waiting to come and take him home. The women said they are looking for a perp, ie Tony Soprano!! Also Costa Mesa California is a place where historic herders waited while tending to the cattle " a Way station." Like Purgatory. Also the grappa sandwich he never gets to eat. In researching groupa it is a fish that could be poisonous could this mean evil or temptation. .
Their are still a few things we are waiting to figure out: Who was the voice on the other side of the phone what is the significance if any of her calling him TON so much?? Also when he picked up the phone to dial the number and put it back down, we think he was ready to deal with his real life and then felt he was not ready.
I loved this episode for the average Soprano watcher who wants action ( like my husband.( this can be a blur. The Above references were researched and talked about by my sister and I.
Carmela did a great job!!! A+
