sports for kids in SoWal area

We're going to be moving to SoWal this summer if all goes well....(:biggrin::biggrin: ) so I'm thinking ahead here...

I have two girls 10 and 12, who play softball and volleyball.... other than their making the middle school teams, are there any local parks that have rec leagues for kids in the SoWal or surrounding areas, or am I going to need to look for club teams?

One of my girls also plays golf; are there any public courses around that I can take her to that won't break my (admittedly meager) bank? Giving up the country club membership, at least for a while, is one of the sacrifices we'll be making to move to SoWal...

I think the regular softball season for girls is in the Spring. And while there are local golf courses, I guess it depends on many things as to whether a person considers them affordable. The semi-private Santa Rosa Beach Club offers public golf (guest rate varies, I believe) and then there is a somewhat entertaining Davis Love designed Executive course called Origins, which has a walking rate around $25 - $35.

And, if your girls are ever interested in giving soccer a whirl, check out US98 Soccer Club's website at www.us98soccer.com. It is a non-profit, recreational soccer club, doing what it can to feed the local populations hunger for The Beautiful Game!!

Thanks DCF. $25-$35 is very reasonable for golf, so that's good news! Yes, softball is primarily a spring sport though you sometimes see fall ball as well; are there any local parks that have rec programs, do you think?

Ah yes, soccer.... I know all about soccer. My stepkids are both avid and talented players, and play club level -- they won't be moving down with us as they live with their mother. My girls played for a couple of years, and enjoyed it, but it's definitely not their first sport. Glad to know there's some futbol going on down there! :D

Might be Fall Ball for the boys, but I am as yet unaware of such for the girls. While Walton County Parks & Recreations is responsible for the fields, my understanding is that baseball and softball are non-profit run entities. Not sure if they have website or not.

Futbol appreciates your support. Cheers!

I am sure you are so excited to be moving. We are hoping for that to happen after the end of the year. My girls are big softball players too and I asked this question last year when we were hoping to move. Here is the thread http://www.sowal.com/bb/showthread.php?t=13637&highlight=softball. We actually checked out Frank Brown Park and it looks really nice. Obviously, it could be a haul depending on where you live. I don't know if some teams might practice closer or not. Keep me posted on what you find out, I would love to hear. My girls are 9 and 6. My son is the one into soccer at 5.

If you're going to end up on the western side of Walton County, you aren't too far from the reasonably-priced Golf Garden in Destin. There's also the Eglin AFB course in Niceville- reportedly cheap and I've heard these days you don't need a Department of Defense id to play there anymore.

My husband does work for Eglin and Hurlbert (sp?) so hopefully we won't have trouble there!!

Yep, it's funny how girls' fall ball hasn't caught on. I'm actually our park's softball director, and I started a fall ball program for the girls this year. We had forty+ girls participate, which for our park was really great! A lot of times being director feels like :bang: but then, when you see the girls playing and having fun and learning, it's all worth it.

Thanks, I'll read back over your thread. Will definitely keep you posted!

I will have to introduce you to a local family with two girls and mom is the coach for their softball team and she should know a lot more about other sports.
