Hat Tips
Women?s Hats are a important tradition with the Kentucky Derby. Generally they are large, trimmed with flowers or netting, and look pretty and feminine. Many stores in Louisville will offer great selections, including the Gabriel Amar for Frank Olive, Patricia Underwood, Jill Henning, and other prestigious designer creations.
Consider purchasing your hat before your outfit, as the focus through the day will be on your face and hat, not your outfit. Also, consider selecting a hat that may have a hint of the color of your outfit, rather than attempting to match it in exactly the same color. It tends to blend in an overall more flattering and interesting look. Shoes and handbags are also a part of the total image, and should be coordinated so that all blends well together. Put on all components and look in the mirror. If your hat is bold and strong, consider keeping all other aspects somewhat toned down, so as to not overdo your total image.
Hats should be placed down on the head, with just one finger?s width over the eyebrow to the hat?s brim. Pull the hat down on to the head, so that the crown is touching the top of your head. Most hats look best when slightly tilted to one side. Also, a hat looks best when all hair is pulled off the face, and behind the ears. Just the hat and the face should be the focal point. Bangs complicate and clutter the look.
A tip for those going to the Track, and then on to dinner or a party. ?Hat Hair? can be a problem. The answers? 1. For longer hair, wear the hair pulled back in an interesting design at the nape of the neck, and add fresh flowers to your look for the evening. 2. For shorter hair, do not put any products in your hair in the morning. Carry a small can/bottle of hair spray in your handbag, and after the Derby, pull the hair up and spray to lift it.
