The Roots of White Anxiety

New posts
obviously, at least to some, there is the backdrop of american history, in all it's racist, male oriented glory, to provide some context to her statement.

Context doesn't make it any less prejudicial.

The author is racist and promoting racism. UGH! I am proud of my heritage and I know I would be no matter what race or country. I blame no one for my opportunities or shortcomings; I feel absolutely no guilt for my accomplishments and am very grateful. I am a woman and the white man has kept us all repressed long enough, which BTW did not emanate only 250 years ago. Ya know?

Live, as a WHITE person, amongst a couple of million different racially-ethinic folks (think Africa, or anywhere), and you'll have a different perspective. We are so isolated in our worldly understanding, yet so verbal in our short-sighted opinions, that what we have to opine about is laughable. Get outside your comfort zone, your state, your country, your continent, and then (and only then)you'll have a lot more intelligent input into the conversation..... Otherwise, you're just blowing hot air.

Its more than just color issues that we are short-sighted about. As a very young nation, we fundamentally don't grasp the interactions between different ethnic and national groups and it gives us screwed up foreign policies again and again.

We tell ourselves that Iraq's Kurds, Shia and Sunnis can live happily ever after (and in a democracy no less.) We intervene in the former Yugoslavia without a grasp of the fact that those people have had over a thousand years to perfect their hatred of each other and we aren't going to change that. We don't even really grasp how much the French hate the rest of Europe (and vice-a-versa.) or how most of Asia feels about Japan. The ignorance is astounding.

We have this short-sighted view that because the basis of our government (sort of) works well for us that we must spread it everywhere.

I don't think it's that we are necessarily short sighted, I think we have actually made it work so we think others can too.

Have we actually made it work? Or are we such a young nation that the deep divides have not yet formed? It sure doesn't seem like The Right and the Left are getting any closer together, and now we havethe Teaparty and all this racism boiling up again. I think what ever held us together thru the World Wars is not apparent anymore.

Compared to other countries we have. And we have the same groups as those other countries - partly because we are the asylum and land of opportunity.

Obviously we haven't been perfect over the years (and the illegal immigration cluster is not helping), but minorities of all kinds have it one hell of a lot better here than elsewhere - where they are legally 2nd class citizens and kept separate.

They can be citizens, they can own property, they can worship, they can travel freely, they have the same access and legal rights as others.

I don't think many realize just how poorly most countries treat minority groups and the level of discrimination.
