These are Not Good Reasons to be Against Health Insurance Reform

New posts
Goodwitch58, thanks for posting that.

You are welcome.

Having been a single mom with a son for many years and being self-employed for much of that time, I am completely empathetic with this writer. And, she is only one of many.

It is beyond time that the private-for-profit insurance industry in this country is called to account. The current situation is unsustainable, and is totally geared to profit that is earned from the illness of American citizens.

While the current bill may not be as good as it could be, and IMO does not go nearly far enough, it is at least a start...and would immediately help this Mom and her child.

It is completely shortsighted for Americans to allow these kinds of situations to exist--and why so many can not understand that, and be willing to do something positive about it, is beyond my grasp.

It may cost too much, but that will not matter in 20 years if children like this woman's son are allowed to languish and, some die, simply to allow another CEO of another insurance company to take home a billion $$ bonus.

And the drug industry is not blameless...I just heard from a deal friend right here in Santa Rosa Beach...she is also self-employed and was just diagnosed with cancer...her chemo started last week, and Tuesday when she went to the pharmacy to get the prescription for the shot she has to have after the chemo...the bill for ONE SHOT WAS OVER $3600.00...and that was after her insurance had paid its portion!

If any of you feel strongly about passing this bill, I would suggest that you call Congressman Allen Boyd who represents us. He voted no before and says he will again...he is also voting against students getting their student loans without going through the middle-man banks, so that students are paying more and waiting longer....I am not sure who is representing, but it's not people without insurance or students in NW Florida who are trying to educate themselves...you can reach him at 202 225-5235 or through this toll free # 1-877-445-1317.

swgb, that's just a ridiculous statement. This board has talked the talking points to death. Right now, it's not reform, it's a plan that is forcing ideals on many Americans who are are screaming, 'NO!' Why are 37 states prepared to sue the US Gov't for passing such a bill if it weren't something taking rights away from you?

I have on many occasions suggested starting within the legal system for reform, then pharma. I discuss such items with people who can discuss. I am absolutely for everyone having medical care. I am not for having it shoved down my throat and forcing me to pay for people who make other choices and do not take care of their bodies; yep, inclusive of disease management. This should include accountability and responsibility, which this bill does not. We do not need this to be an entitlement, which is exactly what it is. This bill will damage more small and medium sized businesses. It will stall this recovery and prolong the imminent inflation glaring at us right now.

I just hope this bill isn't passed and that they don't 'deem' it passed. A poor win, IMO. We need reform, not this bill.

Let me apologize for not being clear, that was not directed at you, you was used as a third person in that case.

Again the vast majority of people against this are of that opinion due to a lack of understanding it. The insurance industry, GOP, and teabaggers have all worked very hard to put misconceptions and fear into peoples minds.

I'm assuming that you have read the bill and that is where you are drawing your conclusions from?

Groovy. No, I haven't read it. Have you? Nor have I based my opinion on the insurance industry lobbying, GOP or Teabaggers. Right now, our politicians NEED to listen to the American People.

You mean the American People who haven't read the bill? :floor:

And why is that capitalized - is this a new upbeat singing group? Doesn't everybody miss Up with People? Don't you think we need them again? I see a big following for an UWP/Palin tour.

Edit: Oops, never mind, UWP encourages a global perspective now and wants members to be bridge builders:

 Please! Did you read the bill?

What are they thinking

I wonder how is it possible for so many republicans to be against the better health of so many people. Being from so different parts of the country, how can they all think alike. I asked myself when the health summit was going on did any of the Republicans have people in their states who need health care since so tragedy was mentioned by any of them. This is so scary to see the country divided by party lines. Where is the humanity?

When these Republicans were elected to serve the people, did they promise to the people they would say no to anything to help them? I doubt cancer is selective. Why are we not hearing from their constituents?

Yes, this vote is historic. When in this country have we had such division since the Civil War? God Bless the United States of America.

I don't think this is an us vs. them for the politicians. I see Democrats, Libertarians and Independents who are for reform, yet opposed to this bill. A lot of the opposition has to do with the 'rush,' content and cost. I certainly expect my representatives to read the bill and be thoughtful for Americans, especially those who need the help the most.

I did read the Senate bill, which this basically is. That bill has been sitting there since December, so I think all members of Congress have had time to read and digest it. If they can't read, they each have staff members to read and summarize the bill, but since Congress is heavily populated with lawyers, I think they can probably understand it.

Yes, it's 1000 pages, but it's in legal form, so it probably actually has fewer words than a Harlequin romance.

I read four or five different summaries today, all of which agreed on the main points.

And I wouldn't call something rushed that has been on the front pages, been discussed in Town Hall meetings and been analyzed comprehensively by all of the affected professional organizations for the last 12 months.

Good. Anything in this bill that, in your opinion, shouldn't be? Anything that should be included?
