Seems they did try to handle it differently. If the story is right, the Government asked for their stuff back. Seems former President Trump and his lawyer even alluded to the fact they didn't have to do the search as there were negotiations ongoing about returning files.

The same filing also includes an affidavit from Trump himself, indicating that he “authorized Alina Habba to search my private residence and personal office located at The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida for any and all documents responsive to the Subpoena.” Habba indicated she conducted similar searches at Trump’s residences and office at his Bedminster estate.

I'm having a hard time following this. Is this saying Letitia had a subpoena to search Mara Lago, and that the search was conducted by Trump's attorney, Alina Habba?

This is separate from the NY lawsuit. I know there are so many it’s confusing.
This is NARA wanting the documents back trump stole.
The subpoena was for those documents and trump and his attorneys said there were none to be found.
Shockingly they were lying as proven by an informant.
What’s interesting is tax records were included in the inventory list from the raid that he may have been hiding from Letitia James’ investigation.

Just for my own purposes, I have tried to condense the "espionage case" into a condensed version. This is what it looks like to me (so far) :

DOJ Case:

Trump had, in his possession, government documents (regardless of classified status), that he was not authorized to possess – Trump has admitted he had the documents multiple times

Trump was formally, legally, requested to return the documents – he refused, repeatedly – Documented

DOJ recovered these documents from Trump’s night club – Documented

He has been ordered by the special master to show cause why he had a reason to possess them- he has not complied

(1) I declassified them – doesn’t provide any proof – but, it doesn’t matter, possession of the documents, regardless if they are classified or not, is a crime

(2) I didn’t know they were there – he has admitted ordering them taken: some of them found in his desk

(3) FBI planted them – he has been asked by the special master to provide proof – he has not complied
