kids and drugs

The roads would be a LOT safer if more folks traded liquor for weed. I'd be first to sign on to outlaw alcohol if they would. I've lived over 40 years with multiple alcoholics in my family/friend circle, so know first-hand how that affects ones' life. That said, I've never heard of anyone causing an accident/death SOLELY on account that they'd smoked pot....wish I could say that for beer/wine/hard liquor. And what effect might that have on domestic abuse.....pot mellows, booze causes complete impairment and agression (usually aimed at loved ones). Say what you will, but it is a wive's tale that smoking pot leads to "bigger things", though I lost a well-educated, supremely intelligent niece to coke/crack/meth....and she'd never been interested in pot at all. Go figure.

Kids will be kids, and will push every envelope....better they be caught stoned than found dead in a ditch......

One time in Seaside, someone gave me a sample of free fudge. Now, everytime I go back, I have to buy fudge. Don't do fudge. Fudge is bad. I need fudge rehab.

aleo - you are such a nut!!! :lolabove::wave:

come on everyone - lighten up a little on the teens. yes, teens are horrible in almost all respects;-). however, we were all once a teen. my parents were outstanding role models for all 4 of us kids, but we still managed to get into just about anything and everything you don't want your teens to get into. Teens are still just teens. Hopefully, even with mistakes, they will learn to make good choices. All you can do is raise 'em. Then you have to trust 'em. Trust them to make mistakes and learn from them.

bob has it right - we've all been there during our teens and even far beyond those years.

and btw, there is plenty for SoWal teens to do around here. Please lets not rush the onslaught of the usual suburban sprawl such as bowling alleys and such. Kids do enjoy Pier Park, Destin Commons, Grayton Beach, get togethers at friends homes, Seaside, and many other beautiful places our area has to offer. The beach/bay and coastal lakes are all incredible places to swim, surf, kayak and just hang out. I think our area has much more to offer teens in some ways - we are rich in natural environments. Families and friends of all ages tend to do things together quite often around here. Ever notice how people of all ages congregate at outdoor music concerts or at someone's home for dinner? I think its wonderful that ours is a culture of togetherness, and not adults in one place, kids in another. yes, teens do need to go off and be teens. and they do. its a pretty safe place to be a teen here - as long as they learn to drive on Hwy 98 :yikes:. That road is the ONLY thing that scares me around here about teens.

Just for the record, I did not start a thread on drug pushers in Seaside. Kurt started the thread. Rather, I made a post on a thread regarding activities for teens on Halloween started by NightAngel. I thought I was performing a public service by warning people about what my friend was shocked to discover this summer.
After seeing the negative reaction to my post, I decided on October 21 to make no more comments on the subject so as not to ?bump? this thread. I love Seaside ? we enjoy it every time we visit which is about 25 times a year ? so I didn?t want to inadvertently harm Seaside.
But then it got bumped yesterday. Tootsie, maybe you, like my friend prior to this summer, haven?t been personally affected by this.
Thanks to Kurt making a new thread out of this, what I was trying not to bump to the forefront has been drastically bumped to the forefront. I am truly sorry that I ever made that first post. It was a mistake. I should have P.M.?ed NightAngel.

I have been so confused! I don't know where this thread originated, but thank you Beach Runner, for setting the record straight that your stage name was hi-jacked of sorts. I find that interesting to say the least.

Yes, teens will be teens and let's hope they don't venture down the path of coke/meth/crack like H2BMe's niece did. When my niece told me some of her antics, was I mortified? No.....I did the same things. When I shared with her some of my antics, she actually became more studious and wanted to excel in her college studies and work.........and, she did!

I'll bet drugs can be bought in Oakland and Sewickley - two very affluent areas like Seaside. Drugs can be bought anywhere and they are also purchased by adults, not just teens.

None of them do drugs, I'll bet. :lie:

...Next someone will post we have a gang problem next time they see a group of kids hanging out in sowal. ...
Already happened when some graffiti appeared, and when the kids broke into the Catholic church and spray painted stuff, and when the surfer kids at Gulf Place gather in groups numbering more than one person.

I'm sure the Florida Gators are told the same thing as every other college athlete -- Don't get caught doing anything that would hurt this school or team, with the emphasis on "don't get caught."

I do not think this incident means that drugs are available in Seaside. we have spent every single halloween at Seaside for many years and believe me, people of all ages are having a really good time in a really wonderful family atmosphere. not fair to make such a blanket statement about seaside or any community, imo. and certainly not accurate.

Halloween in Seaside is wonderful. We stopped by to waste some time before dinner and it was great. Seeing the kids and grown ups running around.

I just talked to my 3rd grade teacher in Louisiana. She was talking of the crime in this little town that used to be like Seaside, but had 6K residents. And she was my teacher 45 years ago. I was telling her about the 18 miles of bike paths and how nice it was seeing kids of all ages without parents riding up and down the road.

So I agree with you.

I also like seeing the Jailbirds picking up paper. Good sight for the little kids to see. Especially these that come to visit. Might have a positive impact on their lives.

OK, here goes my 2 cents. Drugs are available to anyone looking for them, and that includes Seaside. There are enough lookers so pushers don't have to push.

I'd rather raise my children in Sowal, including letting them hang out in Seaside, than anywhere else I have been or lived. How you prepare your kids for life, as it is now, is the key to avoiding trouble with drugs, sex, etc. Kids that are not comfortable discussing these subjects wih their parents are the ones that are most vulnerable, IMO.

And let's not forget that we have great kids in Sowal and we as parents need to help each other and keep an eye out for each others children. Be realistic and be positive.

Iris, I believe I know what you are trying to say with the above, but it is a shame that we think that picking up litter is a job for prisoners. It is a job for all of us and if you really want to teach a kid something, set the example by picking up litter yourself.
