kids & drugs

One time in Seaside, someone gave me a sample of free fudge. Now, everytime I go back, I have to buy fudge. Don't do fudge. Fudge is bad. I need fudge rehab.

I agree that we need more kid (and non-bar) adult activities here - especially once the sun goes down.

As teens we could find many ways to entertain ourselves during the day, but once it got dark it was movies, bowling, a party at someone's house, or a bonfire out in a field.

NatureWalk would be a great location for a bowling alley w/ indoor basketball courts, dancing, etc. Plenty of room, already on a major paved road w/ stoplights, and surrounded by the forest so the noise nazis can't have a fit.

And as Susan pointed out, a lot of the kids' behavior is learned from their parents - who sure aren't teaching by example as they stagger and DUI around 30-A leaving their kids unsupervised.

I guess some just have yet to figure out we are a tourist / vacation spot marketing to the adults to spend the money. Not to mention retirement. Guess we should shut down the bars and provide a theme park. Just saying.... Oh wait the ones that do have kids here would need to move elsewhere since the hospitality and vacation business will go away. Interesting thought.

The majority of the marketing promotes this area as a FAMILY destination with great beaches.

A few "under 21" activities to appeal to kids/teens is hardly the tourism death knell you make it out to be.

I know at the Jersey Shore, during the summer months, some of the restaurants, meeting Halls, like Elk's club and there was one disco (yes, disco--) that had teen nights with bands and drinks of the non-alcoholic type. I remember the disco because it was right near a small amusement park in Beach Haven where all the shops where and most families went to shop, eat and such. Anyway, you could see the kids lining up to get in. There was a cover charge and all. They looked like about 13 and up, but I am terrible now with ages because some kids look sooo much older. It was busy.

Maybe in Sowal, one of the churches could entertain these or even some of the restaurants in off season. Maybe someone could have these on the beach at nights in the summer months. I remember at that teen and tween age, we were looking to hang out somewhere to see friends from neighboring schools and also meet boys, not necessarily drink or find drugs. Growing up in an urban area, the skating rink and movie theatre were popular weekend hangouts.

most people who experiment in hs end up being the ones that handle themselves much better once the party scene is thrown in their face in college...

and the underage boozing was far more dangerous than the smoking imho
