Once a coastal dune lake, the coastal lake at issue falls under strict permit regulations - any "work" that intrudes on it must be permitted. The intrusion is not in question, and there has never been a permit.
As far as the "white sand" issue, again there are regulations, and the regulations were ignored. The Notice of Violation is posted on this forum.
Edgewater's agent, Suzanne Harris, ordered this work. As a Planning and Zoning Committee member, she was and is (or should have been and should be) very knowledgeable regarding county rules and regulations. No "he said" or "she said" can excuse her behavior - she knows the permitting process must go through the proper channels and the permit itself must be formalized on paper by the proper authorities before any work begins. The verbal ok she claims to have received wouldn't have counted even if she had received it. On this matter alone, the public should be more than concerned. At the very least, we should expect that the people who advise our county government play completely by the rules - to not only know the rules, but to strictly abide by them.
Ms. Harris apparently filed her own "white sand" complaint against an Edgewater neighbor a few months previous to her own white sand violation. She has proven to be knowledgeable on the ordinance. The hypocrisy is a bit sickening.
Ms. Harris also apparently requested a permit for the wall now running through the lake. She requested the permit before the April rains. She didn't get it (even if she "thought" she did), but she still built it. Has her position with the county afforded her special rights? Maybe not, but she gives the appearance that she thinks so.
Mind you, if a permit existed, it would have been promptly posted on this forum. There is no permit and the Edgewater Beach Owners Association is in violation of more than just the white sand ordinance.
That Suzanne Harris is on the Planning and Zoning Committee is not only embarrassing for this county, but a good indication that the vetting process is completely out of whack. That her residency is in question for voting purposes, much less for planning and zoning purposes, is beyond the pale.
Ms. Harris needs to resign and those who appointed her to the Planning and Zoning Committee might need to explain on what basis they did so.
