Petition To Protect Soldier Monuments

New posts
I have clarified my position in regard to slavery. You and the "remove it" crew refuse to accept what I've said. Our Government has perpetrated many "abject evils" that most of you refuse to acknowledge while harping on slavery and how evil it was.
I don't understand. No clarification. Answer my question. Is slavery evil? Does the Confederacy stand for slavery?

And what does any of this have to do with the Confederate flag being flown on government land?

I answered that also. Yes, slavery was evil. Did the confederacy stand for slavery? I think revisionist history has written it that way and the truth is somewhere in between. Most of the soldiers from this area who fought in the Confederate war were to poor to own slaves and were fighting to protect their family and farms.

It's not revisionist history. It's in the Cornerstone Speech of the Confederacy. Look it up or shut up.

Back to the original subject at hand. A petition to protect all soldier monuments. Would you sign it? Why or why not?

I would not. Because this seems to be a political statement rather than trying to honor heroes or make a real difference in our communities. I do not want to see historical soldier monuments taken down for political reasons, though I would rather see local or national places be able to remove or replace a monument for reasons that make sense, and that a community has decided for their own reasons and purposes. It's their monument. It's their public place to renovate, upgrade, replace, or whatever is needed by that community.

Our confederate monument at the Walton County courthouse really belongs to someone else who moved it to public ground. That's ok if that's what our community decided. Maybe some day they would like to replace it with another confederate monument or monument from another war. Or maybe they would move it elsewhere, as it has been moved several times in the past. Options are good. The removal of a monument should be done so with respect and a lot of consideration. Surely monuments have been moved to other places, taken to a museum, taken down entirely, and replaced many times over the course of our history in our country.

So, this petition doesn't make good sense to me. And that's just my opinion. If we really want to protect our heritage, then why not do this in our homes, in our schools, in our museums, and in our revered monuments. Education is everything.

I would also not sign the petition to remove all confederate flags from public property. Again, the local community needs to decide what matters to them.

I would also not sign the petition to remove all confederate flags from public property but with different reasons.

The monument at the Courthouse was dedicated by the women of Walton County. It was first erected in 1871 on the old Courthouse grounds at Valley Church and later moved to Euchee Anna because it was the county seat. It was moved one more time only because Walton County became the County Seat. It was erected in memory of the county's war dead and doesn't need to be moved at all. It has been a part of Walton County history for 144 years!

The flag, added 51 years ago in 1964 has flown beside it, also in memory of the County's war dead and was never an issue until 2002 when Uhlfelder first got his shorts twisted over it and tried it have it removed because it's not "politically correct". What he didn't expect when he attempted it this time was the backlash by people born and raised here who don't share his views and he rallied the Community of North Walton County to protect was is rightfully their history and heritage. True blood Walton Countians whose family members names adorn that monument have an absolute right to protect their heritage and those of us who moved here later or migrated here recently, have absolutely no LEGAL right to tell them that it's not "politically correct" regardless of how its viewed. It's not their history! Its not their heritage! Its not their place! Its not their business! Its not their flag! It doesn't fly in SoWal! Its not their monument!

Many in SoWal, and "real outsiders" (those who don't live here) along with the Uhlfelder's were offered a compromise but that wasn't good enough! So, the BCC decided how it was gonna be and people aren't happy with that either. Well, guess what? There are 50 other states and lord knows how many other counties in the US that they are welcome to call home!!! If it offends them so badly...the road that led them in will lead them out.

What the... ? I'm not offended. Only stating my opinion on this petition. That's it. Please take your self righteous indignation and anger to someone who enjoys engaging on your level. Not interested. Thank you.

I know Teresa...it was not directed at you personally..it is directed at those who seem to think they have the right to tell others what they should or shouldn't believe in and or whats moral and just as long as it suits them. And there are lotsa folks on this board who are telling others what they should believe in and/or do because they are offended.
