Back to the original subject at hand. A petition to protect all soldier monuments. Would you sign it? Why or why not?
I would not. Because this seems to be a political statement rather than trying to honor heroes or make a real difference in our communities. I do not want to see historical soldier monuments taken down for political reasons, though I would rather see local or national places be able to remove or replace a monument for reasons that make sense, and that a community has decided for their own reasons and purposes. It's their monument. It's their public place to renovate, upgrade, replace, or whatever is needed by that community.
Our confederate monument at the Walton County courthouse really belongs to someone else who moved it to public ground. That's ok if that's what our community decided. Maybe some day they would like to replace it with another confederate monument or monument from another war. Or maybe they would move it elsewhere, as it has been moved several times in the past. Options are good. The removal of a monument should be done so with respect and a lot of consideration. Surely monuments have been moved, taken down entirely, and replaced many times over the course of our history in our country.
So, this petition doesn't make good sense to me. And that's just my opinion.
I would also not sign the petition to remove all confederate flags from public property but with different reasons.
