It was very peaceful though. But usually these things are.

It's kinda shocking sometimes for us girls raised in the south ;-) . I was somewhat sheltered 'til I moved up here.

I live in a town that is at least 10 % Hispanic (legal, who knows how many are illegal) and teach at a school that is 30% Hispanic. These folks work jobs that Americans do not want to do. The children want to learn and the parents are supportive of the schools and teachers, unlike many Americans. I have dined with families of the students I teach and been welcomed and treated with respect. Our town has Mexican tiendas on many corners and a lot of Mexican restaurants. This being said, I am all for legal immigrants. Yes their plight in Mexico is dismal and a sad way to live. However, they need to come to the states and play by our rules. The leaders of our country have a huge task ahead of them deciding what is best.....glad it is not me.

Why do I always forget you are in Chicago! I may be heading that way when we do the changeovers....you know...the Marshall Fields thing.

Yeah, the Marshall Fields thing. It dosen't bother me, but MOST people up here are pretty pi$$ed that the name will be changed. Especially at the flagship store on State St.

I guess I am stupid to the laws of America. I wasn't aware that certain laws applied to some ethnic groups but not to others. However, this thread will provide a good educational experience for my 13 year old son.

babies at 12 is ok.

Dabell...please remember not to lump all people from a country together in a negative way. I don't know about you, but I am an "immigrant". This country was built by immigrants. It is a difficult issue for sure and you are entitled to your opinion....because immigrants decided that was how to start a country.

Read the paper, listen to the news....although you will not hear all of it, many men from this country travel to Mexico for what you describe above.

Dabell, I don't think anyone will argue the other side of it being wrong to have sex with 12-year-olds. And, fortunately for us in the U.S., it's considered a serious crime. So, look at it this way--if there are men who do this here and are caught and/or reported, they'll suffer the consequences.
I don't know for a fact, however, that this is some sort of cultural Mexican practice or belief, so no way will I consider this argument a good reason for immigrants to stay in their own country. Unfortunately, we have plenty of American born and bred men who like 12-year-old girls, too.
