Been thinking about the College Coaching carousel this morning. Particularly Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley and their recent moves. Every year Notre Dame and Oklahoma have high expectations placed upon them and the success is evident if you look at their respective records. So you have to ask, why leave a program with the success you have built for a programs that have struggled for whatever reason? Both USC and LSU are storied programs that have fell on hard times, LSU more recent but USC it seems has been forever. We have seen the shiny stuff the new coaches are supposedly receiving for the services, but coaching seems to be a short term thing and although some contracts guarantee a lot, being unemployed and labeled a failure because you couldn't turn a program around is a chance you take going to a new position.
I have 2 thoughts on the why's. Number 1 is pretty self explanatory, The Challenge of rebuilding a program. Both these schools have a recruitment pool so getting the players won't be the issue. Building the program into the coaches vision will be interesting. The second reason, is the Messiah complex, I can fix it because I am all that and a can of chips.
We have all seen coaches come and go. I am a Gators fan and I liked Dan Mullen and although I hated to see him go without the opportunity to right the ship, I understand College Football is a business and depending on the school there are expectation to excel. Whatever the case, if Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley don't succeed in fixing the issue, they both should be able to live without having to go find another job. Guess there is something to be said about being sought after rather than going to apply for a job.
